We were fortunate to attend a webinar with Dr. Beatson, Brand Ambassador for New Zealand Hops. According to New Zealand Hops, "Dr. Beatson had been working in the research and development of hop breeding and genetics for 38 years at Plant & Food Research." During the webinar, Dr. Beatson revealed the two New Zealand Hops varieties that he is most proud of are Nelson Sauvin, and the recently released Nectaron®.

Dr. Beatson's Bio

Nelson Sauvin™ - Released in 2000, "The quintessential New Zealand hop" is a dual-purpose hop adds fruitiness to both Ales and Lagers alike. A great addition to new-world beer styles including American Pale Ale and IPAs. Developed by New Zealand's Plant & Food Research, "the essential oil profile displays characteristics of fresh crushed gooseberries a descriptor often used for the grape variety Sauvignon Blanc, giving rise to this variety's name."

Yakima Quality Hops

Introducing the new YQH-1320 experimental hop variety. Discovered in Idaho on a hunting trip, these new hops attributes a tropical, citrus and stone fruit flavor and aroma. Our representative attended the fall harvest last year and described the hops as tropical fruit punch and limeade. The folks at Yakima Quality Hops even reached out to us a couple weeks ago. They were kind enough to provide us with a full PDF spec sheet which is available below.

Lallemand Dry Pitching Practices

On 3/13/23, Lallemand posted on their Instagram page "Dry pitching is the preferred method of inoculating wort. This method is simpler than rehydration and will give more consistent fermentation performance and also reduce the risk of contamination. Rehydration of yeast prior to pitching should be used only when equipment does not easily facilitate dry pitching."
