City Manager's Report

April 10, 2026 | FayettevilleNC.gov

The Latest from Doug

This week, we presented the 2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to City Council. The CIP is our long-term roadmap for investing in Fayetteville’s future, focusing on the major projects that shape how our City grows, moves and serves residents. While the annual budget covers day-to-day operations, the CIP looks ahead at the bigger investments like roads, parks, public safety facilities, drainage and other infrastructure that directly impact quality of life.

The recommended CIP spans six years and includes nearly $700 million in planned investments. These projects are guided by Council’s priorities and shaped by community input, with a focus on strengthening public safety, improving transportation and connectivity, expanding parks and recreation opportunities, supporting economic growth and neighborhood revitalization and addressing stormwater needs to reduce flooding and improve resilience. While this plan moves forward with many important investments, it also reflects a simple reality. We have more needs than available funding, and some projects will have to wait for future resources.

City Council also took an important step forward this week by approving the construction contract for the McArthur Road Sports Field Complex, awarding the project to Group III Management for $13.6 million. This project will bring twelve more baseball fields to Fayetteville. The complex will do more than expand recreational opportunities for families; it will help position our City as a regional destination for sports and competitive play, drawing teams, tournaments and visitors from across the region.

We’re looking forward to breaking ground soon and seeing this long-awaited project become a reality for our residents.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
