The Latest from Doug

Great communities are shaped by the investments they make and the commitment behind them. The Courts at Glenville Lake are that kind of investment, one that will be worth the wait and will serve Fayetteville for decades to come. As I walked through the nearly completed tennis center, I couldn’t help but think about the players who will use this facility for either practice or competition. It was such a pleasure to give the community an official preview of The Courts at Glenville Lake and see the excitement on everyone’s faces.

The center will feature 11 tennis courts, one of which will be used as a championship competition court, locker rooms, a lounge, a learning area and a pro shop. And, of course, we included four pickleball courts for the growing sport of pickleball.

While there is still work taking place at the site, we can see how far we’ve come. Once we finish the courts, we can officially plan for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening. This center belongs to you. So, whether you’re picking up a racket for the first time or have been playing for years, we invite you to use this space to get active, have fun and connect with your friends and family.

When I pause to reflect over the past few years, we have built two senior centers and enhanced our adaptive recreation center, including the splash pad and the new construction of an inclusive play space. We’ve made updates to the Jordan Soccer Complex, connected our trails, and upgraded the Cape Fear River Trail. We’ve also improved a variety of recreation centers, playgrounds, and parks, along with adding multiple splash pads across the City, including the Deep Creek Community Center.

These investments make our community a great place to live and help create a sense of belonging. City Council has made it their priority to focus on expanding Parks and Recreation opportunities, creating more ways for residents to stay and play here in Fay.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and don’t forget to check out all the fun activities happening around Fayetteville this weekend.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
