City Manager's Report

August 15, 2025 | FayettevilleNC.gov

The Latest from Doug

This weekend in America’s “Can Do” City is full of ways to learn, connect and celebrate who we are. Beyond festivals and programs, we’re expanding opportunities to talk directly with your City team, whether at the next Fayetteville OutFront happening on Aug. 28, or my upcoming “Doug in the District” taking place on Aug. 22 at the FCYC building. Watch our official channels for dates, or reach out to the City Manager’s Office any time, we want to hear what’s working, what’s not, and what’s next.

Tonight, our Office of Community Safety has planned another exciting Late Night Fun Night, an energetic, safe hangout for ages 12 to 17 that will happen from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. at the Cliffdale Recreation Center, 6404 Cliffdale Road. We hope you already registered but would like you to know you can still attend even if you didn’t get a chance to. Thank you for helping us create a welcoming space to have fun, meet friends, and engage with caring adults.

Tomorrow, the Airborne & Special Operations Museum will host National Airborne Day and celebrate the Liberty Tree’s 250th Anniversary from 8:00 a.m. to noon, including a 9:45 a.m. mock-door demonstration and an 11:30 a.m. proclamation signing on the museum grounds. Admission is free, and it’s a terrific family experience right in the heart of downtown.

National Airborne Day is more than a date on the calendar; it marks 85 years since the first official U.S. Army parachute jump on August 16, 1940—a tradition later recognized by presidential proclamation in 2002. That legacy lives here because Fayetteville is proudly adjacent to Fort Bragg, home to the 82nd Airborne Division and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, and because ASOM has become a true bridge between soldiers and civilians in our downtown.

Also happening tomorrow is a community conversation focused on those who serve. A Veterans Legislative Town Hall is scheduled from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Kiwanis Recreation Center at Honeycutt Park. If military service touches your family or you simply want to listen and learn, please join the conversation as your voice is welcome.

As always, these events are part of OUR bigger story: Fayetteville thrives when residents lean in to make our community better.

Thank you for showing up for one another and for this place we share that we affectionately call home.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
