Thank you to everyone who joined me for Doug in the District conversation today. This initiative is about creating opportunities for residents to engage directly with their City Manager, ask questions, and share concerns in a candid, welcoming setting.
At this gathering, we discussed a wide variety of topics that are important to our community—from updates on Fire Station 4 and zoning matters, to city beautification efforts and the real-world challenges our staff navigates to resolve issues on your behalf. These discussions remind me that local government is at its best when we are listening, learning, and working side-by-side with residents to shape solutions.
I’d like to acknowledge our City Council members who were able to show up to the meeting. Their dedication to these conversations ensures real action and policy that benefits the people of Fayetteville carry well beyond these discussions.
Another event which took place this morning concerned one of our most important responsibilities: preparing the next generation. That’s why the Shaping the Future Youth Symposium is such a vital conversation. We all know the challenges facing young people are real, whether it’s mental health, education, workforce readiness, or safety. These are not issues one organization or one department can solve alone.
Our commitment is clear. We’re making intentional investments in our youth, from the My Future So Bright program, which connects students to workforce experiences, to the Starward STEM initiative, which gave dozens of middle schoolers the chance to compete nationally. We’re also investing in mentorship, digital literacy, and safe spaces for learning and growth, such as the Police Activities League and the reimagined Orange Street School.
But the real impact comes when these investments are combined with strong partnerships. This symposium, led by our Economic & Community Development Department and the Office of Community Safety, united nonprofits, mentors, educators, and leaders who share a vision for brighter futures. By identifying service gaps, amplifying the voices of young people, and strengthening collaboration, we are laying the foundation for a citywide movement that will benefit generations to come.
Happening tomorrow is the Fayetteville NEXT Adult Field Day. This is a fun, free event designed to bring neighbors together through fitness, games, and connection. Featuring morning yoga, team competitions, live music, and local food trucks, the event creates a welcoming space for adults to unwind, stay active, and celebrate the spirit of fellowship that makes Fayetteville unique.
I want to thank you again for taking the time to participate in Doug in the District and helping shape the future of Fayetteville. Together, we are proving once again, why we are America’s Can Do City.
