City Manager's Report

The Latest from Doug

With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, I’m reminded that loving where you live matters. And the best way to show that love is through action, whether that is by serving, volunteering, supporting local or staying engaged with your City.
Thursday, we had a wonderful opportunity to come together for the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations Community Awards to celebrate and honor individuals and organizations who truly love this community and are committed to the well-being of others by spreading positive human relations. This is the community’s way of letting them know, we see them, we value them and we appreciate the difference they’re making.
As I mentioned earlier, getting engaged with the City means loving home. This week, City Council voted to expand opportunities for residents to speak directly with them. Public Forum has been added to the Council’s Work Session that occurs on the first Monday of every month, beginning at 6:15 p.m., following announcements and recognitions.
On another note, City Council also received an independent engineering report on Fire Station No. 4 by Applied Building Sciences (ABS). ABS was hired to assess the project. After a thorough assessment, the engineering firm recommended that Council move forward with demolition, including the superstructure and foundations, to allow for reconstruction of the building. Although this is a setback for this project, we will gather information on updated costs associated with the complete demolition and rebuild to report back to Council. Fire Station No. 4 will replace an aging facility and improve emergency response times for about 5,000 homes in the area. It was difficult to hear, but our top priority is ensuring our first responders have a safe place to work and serve you and this community.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a lovely Valentine’s Day. Be sure to shop and dine locally. We have many options right here in Fayetteville for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
