When I first began my career in local government, I served as a Public Information Officer. I was responsible for managing communications and marketing programs, and I came to understand that keeping the public informed is one of the most important responsibilities we have. Residents deserve to know what their government is doing, why decisions are being made and how those decisions impact their daily lives. Communication builds trust. It connects people to services, opportunities and one another. And in moments of urgency or crisis, it ensures our community has accurate information they can rely on.
That experience gave me a deep appreciation for the professionals who dedicate their careers to public communication. Today, we recognize Government Communicators Day, a time to thank the talented individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our community informed. Our Marketing and Communications team and Public Information Officers across the City are storytellers, strategists and community connectors.
You see their work on FayTV. You hear it on Radio Fayetteville. You read it on our social media platforms and on our website. And you see it in the news stories they help bring together through their work with our media partners.
Their work matters.
To our communicators across the City, I want to express my gratitude for your commitment to telling our City's stories. I’ve sat in that seat. I understand the responsibility and the pressure that come with the role. The work may often happen behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across our entire community.
I encourage you, as a resident, business owner or community partner, to take a moment and explore the many ways of staying informed and connected with us.
I also want to thank the Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for the invitation to speak at the Coffee Club meeting this week. I appreciated the opportunity to connect with members, share updates on current City projects, highlight the progress we’re making and discuss the initiatives ahead. I’m grateful for the partnership of our business community and the continued dialogue that helps move our City forward.
Lastly, I’d like to invite you to join Mayor Colvin for coffee next Monday at City Hall, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is a moment to learn more about City efforts, hear updates on various topics and chat with the Mayor, City staff and your fellow community members.
Thank you.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
