City Manager's Report

The Latest from Doug

I want to start by sharing what an interesting week we’ve had with wintery weather. I hope everyone is staying warm during these cold temperatures. Many people went out when the snow finally fell across the City to build snowmen and make snow angels. It’s not often our City receives that much snow accumulation. With that, I want to remind everyone to stay prepared, as the winter season is still here. I also want to express my gratitude to our City and State crews for helping maintain roads as best as possible over the past two weeks, along with our first responders who served our community during these wintery weather conditions.

This week, City Council met with City staff for the Council’s annual strategic planning retreat to set City priorities for the upcoming year. With your feedback and the needs and efforts of City staff and departments, Council has reaffirmed the following priorities for Fiscal Year 2027:

Goal 1 – Safe & Secure Community

  • PROPOSED FY27 Council Priority: Continue implementing a comprehensive approach to community safety.

Goal 2 – Economic & Strategic Growth

  • PROPOSED FY27 Council Priority: Enhance economic growth opportunities throughout the City.
  • PROPOSED FY27 Council Priority: Commit to expanding housing and neighborhood revitalization, with an emphasis on affordable housing needs.

Goal 3 – Desirable Place to Live, Work & Recreate

  • PROPOSED FY27 Council Priority: Improve and expand transportation, transit, and other connectivity needs for residents.

Goal 4 – Financially Sound City Providing Exemplary Services

Goal 5 – Collaborative Citizen & Business Engagement

City Council reached a consensus during the retreat, and they will take an official vote on the priorities that will be in the 2027 Strategic Plan with action plans at a future meeting. These goals and priorities help outline a clear vision for a vibrant and sustainable future for Fayetteville residents. Your input and feedback continue to guide the decisions we make to keep Fayetteville moving forward.

I encourage you to stay informed and engage with us during community engagement opportunities, such as Coffee with the Mayor, scheduled for Monday, February 23. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about City efforts, hear updates on various topics, and chat with the Mayor, City staff, and your fellow community members.

Lastly, I want to congratulate Fayetteville’s own, J. Cole, on his new album release: The Fall-Off.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
