As we head into the weekend, I want to encourage everyone to take a few simple steps to stay safe and informed as we are in a State of Emergency.
I hope everyone has had a chance to prepare for the wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain starting tomorrow. Fayetteville and NCDOT street crews are preparing now. They have begun pre-treating roadways through Friday. Our salt and sand spreaders are loaded and ready to go once precipitation begins, and crews will remain on standby throughout the storm to provide continuous coverage and keep roads as clear and safe as possible.
When the wintry mix begins to fall, I encourage everyone to stay off the roads if you can. If you must travel, please slow down, leave extra space, and use extreme caution. While our teams are working, they also need room to do their jobs safely, I want to thank you in advance for giving crews space as they treat roadways.
There is a chance the area may lose power and I would like you to prepare now by checking your emergency kit to ensure you have at least three days of supplies, including food, water, cash, a flashlight, a weather radio, extra batteries, warm clothing, and any essential medications. Please visit the City’s Storm Ready website for information about power outages, safety tips and more. If you are traveling through the Fayetteville Regional Airport, please check with your airline before arriving for the latest flight status and schedule information.
On Monday, I want to invite residents to participate in an important public discussion about neighborhood safety and access. City Council will hold a public hearing on Monday to receive feedback on proposed Council Policy 160.09.2, which would establish a formal process for residents to request “No Parking” zones in multi-use lanes in residential areas. Additionally on Monday, a Public Hearing will be held to rezone a parcel on Rose Hill Road from single family residential to a mixed residential. Residents who wish to participate in the public hearing can register at FayettevilleNC.gov/CityClerk, in person with the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall, or by emailing CityClerk@FayettevilleNC.gov or calling 910-433-1992 by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 26. Any changes would still require City Council approval for both of these hearings.
Stay updated by visiting FayettevilleNC.gov/ReadyFay.
Thank you for looking out for one another. Please stay warm, plan ahead, and let’s get through this weekend safely together.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
