As we welcome 2026, I want to wish you and your loved ones a happy, healthy New Year and to thank you for the pride and perseverance you continue to show in Fayetteville. I’m confident 2026 will be a year of progress, opportunity, and renewed pride because being “America’s Can-Do” isn’t just a tagline, it’s what we choose to be through small daily actions and big shared goals. I’m reminded of this when looking back at 2025 at how often our community chose togetherness. From parades and seasonal celebrations to nights spent enjoying our beautiful downtown, you showed up smiling ready to make memories. We also found meaningful ways to connect throughout the year, including “Doug in the District,” where you shared thoughtful ideas, asked hard questions, and helped me better understand what matters most in your neighborhoods.
Behind the scenes, City employees worked every day to deliver the services you rely on and to strengthen how we serve. This past year included major steps forward in our improving our operations and customer service, and important conversations about the priorities we must keep moving: community safety, revitalization and affordable housing, more youth opportunities through Parks and Recreation, economic growth, and improved connectivity for residents. Through it all, your city staff demonstrated commitment that deserves recognition. In one ceremony alone, we honored 1,340 years of combined service which is an extraordinary reminder that Fayetteville’s success is built on people who care deeply about this community.
I’m also welcoming a new chapter with you for Fayetteville City Council. I want to congratulate our newly elected council members and thank our returning members for stepping forward once again to serve our community. Each council member valuable experience, fresh perspectives, and a shared responsibility to listen, lead, and make decisions that reflect your needs in every district.
As we step into 2026, my hope is simple: let’s lead with kindness. Be patient with one another and check on your neighbors. Drive safely, especially on busy weekends. Look out for friends and family, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it.
Let’s make 2026 a safe and prosperous one together.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
