City Manager's Report

The Latest from Doug

Splash pad season is here, and I know a lot of families have been waiting on this. They’re officially open across the city, free to use, and a great way to cool off and spend time together. And with summer right around the corner, our pools will open on Memorial Day, giving families even more ways to get out and enjoy the season. I hope you’ll take advantage of them.

We’re also taking a close look at something that doesn’t always get talked about but impacts how our city grows—our development review and permitting process. Right now, we’re reviewing how projects move from start to finish across departments and agencies, to see where we can do better.

We’ve heard the feedback. The process can be confusing at times, communication isn’t always consistent, and timelines can feel unpredictable. That’s what we’re working to fix. The goal is simple: make the process clearer, more efficient, and easier to navigate—while still making sure we’re doing things the right way and keeping standards in place.

If you’re a developer, contractor, property owner, or just someone who’s been through the process, we want to hear from you. There’s a survey available now, and we’ll also be hosting a few focus groups. Your input matters, and it will help shape what changes come next.

I also want to take a moment to recognize four local organizations doing important work in our community. Through our Office of Community Safety, we’ve awarded Safe Space Activation Grants to Two Six Project, Fayetteville Urban Ministries’ Find-A-Friend program, Gate Beautiful, and ROOTS Mentoring.

Each of these groups will be creating safe, welcoming spaces for youth and families in your neighborhoods this summer. People can connect, find support, and stay engaged. That kind of work makes a real difference, and we’re proud to support it.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett

Denim Day 2026

On Wednesday, the Fayetteville-Cumberland Human Relations department hosted the annual Denim Day Luncheon. This year’s theme was “From Report to Recovery,” and we were honored to have incredible experts in their field as our panelists.

Denim Day serves as a reminder of the impact of sexual violence on survivors and victims, as well as the incredible strength they find in their communities and support systems. We are grateful to all the attendees who helped us spread the message of support. PHOTO GALLERY
