City Manager's Report

The Latest from Doug

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I want to take a moment to reflect on what this holiday truly means. It's a solemn reminder of the men and women who gave everything so that we could enjoy the freedoms we too often take for granted. To every Gold Star family and to all who carry the weight of that loss, please know that our community sees you and honors your loved ones.

Fayetteville has always held a special place in the heart of our nation's military, and I am so proud that we are home to both the North Carolina Veterans Park and Freedom Memorial Park, right here in our Downtown. Both parks are a place where families, friends, and fellow citizens can reflect on the lives of the Fallen and remember their service to our country. Together, they serve as a reminder that we must never forget. If you haven't visited either park recently, or if you've never been, I encourage you to make the trip this weekend. Whether you go alone for a quiet moment of reflection or bring your children to teach them what service and sacrifice look like, I promise it will be worth your time.

If you're looking for a meaningful way to spend Monday morning, head over to Freedom Memorial Park at 10 a.m. for a special ceremony dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives beyond the fields of battle. All are welcome.

I'm happy to share that the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation pools are opening on Monday to kick off the summer season! We do have some weather moving through this weekend, so just keep an eye on updates and plan accordingly. Visit FayettevilleNC.gov/Aquatics to learn more about our pools, including locations, hours, and fees.

And last, I want to take a moment to recognize our officers with the Fayetteville Police Department. I had the pleasure of attending their swearing-in and promotion ceremony yesterday evening, and I'll be honest, events like this never get old for me. Congratulations to every officer who was sworn in, promoted, or recognized. Their commitment to Fayetteville means everything to the residents we serve together, and I am truly grateful to have witnessed that moment alongside them and their families.

Wishing you and your family a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. Take a moment to remember, and never forget the price of freedom.

Best,

Dr. Douglas J. Hewett

The City of Fayetteville is developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP) to create a safer, more connected Fayetteville for all users. We need community input to help shape the plan!

With funding from the federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant, Fayetteville’s CSAP will focus on making streets safer and reducing traffic crashes, serious injuries, and deaths.
