Today was a proud day for our City. This morning, we broke ground on the new permanent Fire Station 16 at the corner of Cedar Creek Road and Fields Road, and it was a moment long overdue.
Our firefighters serve this community with dedication every single day, and they deserve a permanent home that reflects that commitment. This station has been designed with both our firefighters and our community in mind. This will be a place where the men and women of the Fayetteville Fire Department can work, train and rest, while also serving as a resource for the neighborhood around it. The new station is expected to be completed in Spring 2027 and is the first project funded by Fayetteville's 2022 voter-approved $60 million Public Safety Bond.
I am also excited to share that the City has launched the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) initiative. This community-driven effort is to make our streets safer for everyone who walks, bikes or drives through Fayetteville.
Rooted in the Vision Zero philosophy, this project aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in our City. We will use local data and public input to develop a comprehensive citywide safety action plan. The plan will reflect how real people move through our neighborhoods every day. That means adding sidewalks and crosswalks, improving roadway conditions and making streets more comfortable and reliable for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike.
Most importantly, this plan will be shaped by you.
As part of the first phase of SS4A, we are inviting residents to complete a short online survey. The survey asks how you travel, where you feel unsafe and what changes would make streets more comfortable. All responses will directly shape our citywide safety action plan. We are also hosting in-person informational and feedback sessions across the city to ensure our community has the opportunity to provide their input.
I encourage you, your family and friends to take the survey. You can find the survey, the meeting dates and more information at: FayettevilleNC.gov/CSAP.
Your voice matters. The City is committed to a safe and secure community, and this is what that commitment looks like in action.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
