We have two wonderful opportunities for you to engage with your friends and neighbors throughout our beautiful City.
The first is our Buddy Sports flag football game taking place on Saturday. I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to cheer on the teams. Buddy Sports is such an inspirational program hosted by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation which will warm your heart when you become involved.
The game will be taking place at Massey Hill Ball Field from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and I’d like to thank the Douglas Byrd High School's football team and members from the 1st Church of Fayetteville as they will be the buddies volunteering for tomorrow.
This program provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to learn the basics of sports while building skills and making lasting memories. Each player is paired with a volunteer buddy who is there beside them during the game. I look forward to seeing families and buddies cheering this weekend.
Buddies are usually volunteers from local organizations, school athletic teams, service groups or even friends and family of an athlete. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed to support this program. If you’re ever interested in volunteering, please reach out to the Dorothy Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center at 910-433-1000.
There are also a variety of adaptive programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with different abilities at the Dorothy Gilmore Adaptive Recreation Center. I encourage you to get involved, help support these efforts and check out the many programs at our recreation centers. Whether by volunteering your time, spreading the word or simply showing up to cheer on the teams, your support means the world to us and the participants!
If you’re not able to support the Buddy Sports Program, I’d love you to help with our citywide fall cleanup event, Fayetteville Beautiful, also taking place on Saturday. This year, the City is partnering with the national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful to help improve streets, parks, stormwater drains, and neighborhoods. Residents and volunteer groups can register at FayettevilleBeautiful.com and select a location on the interactive map, whether in their own neighborhood or somewhere else in the City. Supplies will be available for pickup on Oct. 4 from 8 to 10 a.m. at 121 Lamon Street. If you’re helping out, please securely tie filled bags, place only the orange bags several yards from the road. They need to be consolidated at intersections away from traffic. Our team will swing by on Monday, Oct. 6 to pick them up.
There are so many ways to engage, places to relax, and activities to take part in throughout our “Can Do” City. I know you’ll find something perfect for you. I hope to see you taking advantage of what our community has to offer this weekend.
