I appreciate every day I get to be part of America’s “Can Do” community. So much support throughout all the events in the City. This weekend has something for everyone! I hope you can come out to be part of it!
Things start this afternoon at 4:30 to 6 p.m. with a free ranger-led “Edible & Medicinal Plants” hike at J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center. On Saturday, you can celebrate culture downtown at the Korea Culture & Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., The Gathering Place, 421 Maiden Ln. or savor the Heritage & Harvest Bourbon Showcase, noon to 5 p.m. at Cape Fear Botanical Garden. On Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday noon to 6 p.m., you can visit the Fayetteville Greek Festival. On display until Nov. 11, stroll the Field of Honor at the Airborne & Special Operations Museum and Veterans Park. I encourage you to get out, meet a neighbor, and plug into your “Can Do” community!
Congratulations to all our 2025 Public Safety Valor Award recipients. Our community paused last week to honor 50 first responders whose courage, skill, and compassion saved lives and protected neighbors across Cumberland County. Chosen by their chiefs and agency leaders and recognized across eight categories, these honorees represent law enforcement, fire/rescue, EMS, and emergency management teams serving the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and Fort Bragg. Your actions, whether swift on scene or sustained over months, shine a light on the heroic, life-changing work you perform every day. On behalf of the Greater Fayetteville Chamber and a truly grateful community: thank you.
Finally, September is Suicide Awareness Month. A gentle reminder to check in on ourselves and one another. It’s okay not to be okay, and it’s more than okay to ask for help. If someone seems withdrawn, overwhelmed, or unlike themselves, a simple “How are you, really?” can open a door. You don’t have to have the perfect words…just listen, stay present, and help them find support. In the U.S., call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org for 24/7, confidential help. If there’s immediate danger, dial 911. This month and always, let’s lead with kindness and remind each other: you matter, and hope is here.
As always, be kind to one another, give those who you love an extra hug and be a positive influence for those in our community.
Best,
Dr. Douglas J. Hewett
