Additional Silver Knight Award Winners

The Silver Knight Award champions a high school senior’s character, academic achievement, their immeasurable community impact of their project designed, created, and implemented to improve the millions of lives of Miami-Dade and Broward County residents, of all ages.

Since its inception, this being the Silver Knight’s 63rd year, more than 20,000 students have been recognized, and over $1m in cash awards have been presented.

Students are nominated in 15 categories, from Art, Athletics, Business, and Digital & Interactive Media, to Drama, English & Literature, Journalism, Mathematics, Science, Speech, Vocational and Technical, World Languages, among others.

Such Silver Knight winners include

Jeff Bezos, of Amazon, and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson,

And now we can add to the list

1). Adonis Serrano, Mathematics (Mater Academy) has taught children to play soccer at the Miami Lakes Soccer Summer Camp for nearly five years. As coach and coordinator, he teaches kids ages 6-12 how to play the game and imparts life lessons such as discipline, teamwork and a moral code. At Mater Academy, the AP Scholar earned top scores on the math SAT and AP Calculus AB exam. As one of the math club leaders, Adonis tutors students for AP Calculus AB and BC, among the highest math levels in high school.

2). Ashley Adirika, Speech (Miami Beach Senior High) Inspired by her own experience struggling to find support in middle and high school, Ashley Adirika (Miami Beach Senior High) Silver Knight in Speech for Miami-Dade created Our Story Our Word. Her goal was to empower female students of marginalized groups to help them find their voice and realize their potential through mentorship, sisterhood and community service. Throughout Ashley's project, this national speech and debate competitor trained mentees and wrote a guide that focused on public speaking, social and emotional awareness and leadership. Among the issues discussed: imposter syndrome, planning and achieving goals and the importance of sisterhood and empowerment.

3). Joshua Reaves, Drama (Dr. Michael Krop Senior High) believes the arts can uplift and give people a voice. So in 2019, he began teaching music, theater and dance. At the Eye Opener Missionary Ministry’s youth group in Opa-locka, he taught performing arts as an outlet for self-expression. At one point during the pandemic, Joshua partnered with his Krop drama teacher to teach choreography over Zoom and Instagram Live to more than 500 people, with a focus on staying physically active and connecting with others. For this effort, the International Thespian Honor Society Member became a featured artist in the Adrienne Arsht Center’s “Arsht at Home: The Art of Making Series.”
