Deadline Extended! GKII Sunil Kumar and Sumati Murli Fellowship

The GKII Sunil Kumar and Sumati Murli Fellowship, supported by the Sunil Kumar and Sumati Murli Student Training and Mentorship Endowed Fund, is a merit-based award offered by the Gupta-Klinsky India Institute. Two $8,000 grants are awarded annually to JHU doctoral students from any JHU school or division. Funding supports India-related research projects and travel expenses to India.

“We have seen each other through so many personal and professional ups and downs, which is typical for any other graduate student, but we always had each other’s back. There have been moments where we have laughed until our stomachs started hurting on Fells Point, and we have cried on each other’s shoulders when our research projects were not going well,” she says in the column. “In this process, unknowingly, we became each other’s strongest support system here. I’m forever grateful to Hopkins for helping me find these people who complete me like a puzzle piece.”

Can AI Improve How We Handle Obesity Care?

Dr. Rama Chellappa, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Biomedical Engineering spoke with The Hub about the relationship between waist circumference and health risks like diabetes and heart disease—and how they are routinely overlooked in clinical settings. "Our method makes it easier for doctors to predict a patient's obesity risk without needing to directly measure their waist, which can save time and improve the accuracy of risk assessments for obesity-related conditions," Chellappa said.

Become a GKII-GHEFP Program Site
Deadline: Dec. 8, 2024
The Global Health Established Field Placement (GHEFP) Program is a travel grant program sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health (CGH) in which faculty host JHU grad students for practicum experiences at their research/practice sites in LMICs. Faculty must submit site placement applications to host students for the 2025 cycle. The Gupta-Klinsky India Institute partners with the CGH to support India GHEFP placement sites through our GKII Girish & Himangi Rishi Student Travel Award (GRSTA). The deadline for 2025 faculty site applications is December 8, 2024. Students will have the opportunity to apply for approved site placements starting in January, and GKII provides a travel grant of $3500 to the selected students to support travel and living expenses at GHEFP placement sites in India.

Applications are evaluated on both demonstrated scientific contributions and potential for future impact on the field.

Medical Student Global Health Travel Grant

Travel grants are available to Johns Hopkins medical students to facilitate clinical elective rotations, or research/project participation in low- and middle-income countries. Applications from medical students with interests in global health are encouraged. Elective rotations may be clinical, observation focused, or research-based in nature.

Rishi Children's Fund Orphans and Vulnerable Children Travel Grant for JHU Graduate Students

The mission of the Rishi Children’s Fund at Johns Hopkins University is to advance research on how investments in children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds can unlock their potential, leading to improved health outcomes and positive societal change. This travel grant provides funds for JHU graduate students to support travel to affiliated research sites for an 8-16 week global health research or practice experience.

AAUW Fellowship
Deadline: Nov. 15, 2024
The AAUW has open fellowships that support women scholars pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conduct postdoctoral research, or prepare research for publication over eight consecutive weeks. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on scholarly excellence, project quality and originality, and their commitment to advancing women and girls through community service, their professions, or research fields.

AIIS Fellowship Competition
Deadline: Nov. 15, 2024
Applications are now open for the American Institute of Indian Studies 2024 fellowship competition. Junior Fellowships are available for PhD candidates to support doctoral research in India for up to eleven months, and Senior Fellowships are available to support those who currently hold a PhD degree to conduct research in India for up to nine months. AIIS welcomes applicants from a wide variety of disciplines and especially encourages applicants in the fields of Development Studies, Natural Resources Management, Public Health, and Regional Planning.

Action for Women’s Health Open Call

Application Deadline: Jan. 10, 2025
Action for Women’s Health is a $250 million global open call launched by Pivotal, a Melinda French Gates organization, that will fund organizations around the world that are improving women’s mental and physical health. Each awardee will receive flexible funding between $1 million and $5 million USD. Applications should center equity in their approach and be poised to scale their work to strengthen the health of more women.
