NIH Funding Policy Deals New Blow to HIV-related Trial Networks

Dr. Amita Gupta, GKII faculty co-chair and Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins discussed the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) recent funding cuts to HIV clinical trial networks and their negative impact on global HIV research and treatment efforts. “[NIH has] come up with a policy that’s making it really difficult to maintain the integrity of the trial, and we’re trying our very best,” Dr. Gupta said. “But if we can’t keep staff and the lights on, then we’re going to have some real waste and that will just be a total tragedy.”

JHU Shakti, Johns Hopkins's competitive Indian classical dance team, won first place at the Origins National Dance Championship in Chicago on April 12. Their performance told the story of a young girl killed by caste discrimination. They have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the team’s upcoming travel and competition expenses.

"We have been matched with entrepreneurial and clinical mentors by the NIA, who will be helping us progress toward our goals. In the end, it's up to us to leverage these connections and resources to the fullest," Pimpalkar said. "Regardless of whether we win the grand prize, it's going to be a fruitful experience for us and everyone else on the team."

JHU Research Support Program


Johns Hopkins University is offering support for research programs through pivot and bridge grants which have experienced federal grant terminations and delays. This funding provides short-term support to faculty members following sponsored funding terminations or significant delays in federal grant awards. These new grants offer targeted support for affected researchers either to pivot to new research directions and/or funding sources or to bridge their research programs pending sponsored funding.

Supporting our International Community


On April 15, JHU hosted a Town Hall to address growing concerns around executive orders and policy changes that have greatly impacted the international community across the US, including the dozens of JHU students whose visas were revoked by the federal government in recent weeks. Representatives from OIS and Public Safety joined the call and shared pertinent information and sentiments.

Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases Funding Call

The tenth Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases funding is focused on implementation research addressing strategies for strengthening of health systems to improve equity in high quality care and health outcomes and reduce the prevalence and impact of NCDs in low- and middle-income countries and/or in underserved populations experiencing health disparities, such as Indigenous populations, in high-income countries. Applicants are invited to propose appropriately designed and targeted implementation research to support health system transformation and/or strengthening using evidence-based interventions that can be adapted to and implemented in these populations.
