February 2020
Thank you for your interest in local history!
200th Anniversary of the Charter for the Franklin Masonic Lodge

The February meeting for the Franklin Area Historical Society will take place Mon., Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 1355 East Second St. The program will include a tour of the lodge building and a slide show.

Franklin’s Masonic Lodge was founded in 1819 by William C. Schenck, the founder of Franklin. The Masons are one of the oldest continually operating organizations in the area. The history of the Masons is a reflection of the history of Franklin and includes a membership that helped shape the city.

The Art of Jeff Mosby

The Franklin Area Historical Society will host the Art of Jeff Mosby, February 21, 22, 28, 29, March 6, and 7 at the Harding Museum.

Jeff began his career specializing in home and pet portraits and branched out into custom murals. He specializes in both watercolor and acrylic. His paintings are beautifully done with a nod toward the humorous and whimsical. Jeff likes people to get a chuckle as they contemplate his artwork.

Mosby pursued art studies at Illinois State University, California Art Center, UCLA, and the California Institute of Arts. He currently lives in Cincinnati with his wife and a cute, but stubborn, beagle.

All works on exhibit will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Franklin Area Historical Society.

An opening reception for the exhibit will take place on Friday, Feb. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Harding Museum. To RSVP, please reply to this email or call (937) 746-8295.

The museum is located at 302 Park Avenue in Franklin. Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays during the exhibit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The artist will be demonstrating during Saturday hours.

Museum repair update: good news
As we mentioned in the last newsletter, our beautiful Harding Museum generally looks wonderful, but we do face a major repair of one of our chimneys. It has a long crack and must be rebuilt at a cost of $6,000. That was the lowest of three estimates which we received.

Thanks to generous individual donors, a donation from the Fraternal Order of Orioles Nest #263 and a grant from Middletown Community Foundation, we've reached our fundraising goal. Work will begin when the weather breaks in the spring.
HAC Trivia: Feb. 23

The Heritage Advisory Council of South West Ohio (HAC) will host a general trivia event at Valley Vineyards on Sunday, Feb. 23. Doors open at 2 p.m. and trivia begins at 3 p.m

This is HAC's third annual fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting museums and historical societies across South West Ohio. Franklin Area Historical Society is a member of HAC and has been the recipient of several grants.

Cincinnati trivia company Last Call will lead the event. Raffle baskets! Cash prizes for the winners!.

Go solo or as a team. Cost is $20 pp or $100 for a team of six. Seating is limited to 120. To register, use this link.
Thank you for a wonderful home tour!

Another historic holiday home tour is in the books, and the 2019 event was a rousing success! We had great weather and a big crowd, and all of the spaces we explored were wonderful!

Thank you to everyone who opened their home or business, who bought tickets, who provided entertainment, who volunteered, and a huge thank you to our event sponsors The Greenbusch Group and Gross Lumber Company and to our music sponsor, Amy Bridge.
