In the Community

Last Friday, Feb. 9, I had the pleasure of attending a Den meeting of Cub Scouts Pack 32 to talk about what it means to be a good citizen and a good leader. These scouts had a lot of great questions! Thank you to the scouts and parents who attended.

On Saturday, Feb. 10 I spoke to the Greater Tysons Green Citizens Association and discussed several items of interest including Vienna Water pricing, options for trash/recycling collection, the Tysons Forest Community Task Force, traffic around Westbriar Elementary, the pending improvements to Old Courthouse Road, development proposals and the future routing of Boone Boulevard in Tysons, and also the much-disliked casino proposal introduced in the General Assembly (deferred until 2025 session). Thank you to all who participated! The Task Force for the Tysons Forest which buffers this community from Tysons includes nearby residents and other community partners who have met several times to develop high-level strategies for the preservation and enhancement of the stream valley that includes Raglan Road Park and other Fairfax County Park Authority property. My July 2023 Board Matter on the Tysons Forest Community Task Force.

Justice and Legislative Sunday

It is always inspirational to attend the annual Justice and Legislative Sunday event at First Baptist Church of Vienna (photo), which was held last Sunday. I had the opportunity to make remarks and speak to a number of neighbors. Thank you, Pastor Vernon Walton, for all you do for our community!

Public Safety Update

From the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department:

Gas Leak vs. Unhappy Skunk

This time of year, the Fire & Rescue Department sees an increase in the number of calls for possible outdoor gas leaks. Skunks are breeding and deliver their young in 7-10 weeks. If a female skunk is courted by a male that she is displeased with she wards him off by spraying a strong-smelling liquid (oil). The skunk's smell can be mistaken for a gas leak to the untrained nose. The most reliable sign of a natural gas leak is the smell, both Washington Gas and Columbia Gas add an odorant called mercaptan to create the distinctive smell of sulfur or rotten eggs. If you cannot tell the difference between the odors, listen for a hissing noise that gas under pressure would make when escaping a pipe. If you are still unable to tell if it’s natural gas or a skunk, call 9-1-1 and the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department will respond and investigate. Learn more about skunks.
