This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to an FBI report on Hate Crime at Schools from 2018-2022, and provides information on several upcoming trainings including: Effective Communication Principles, Digital Threat Assessment®, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®, Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, and Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations.

FBI Releases Report on Hate Crime at Schools from 2018-2022

The Federal Bureau of Investigations recently release the report Reported Hate Crime at Schools: 2018-2022. According to the report, "school was the third most common location for a reported hate crime offense to occur during the entire five-year period of 2018 to 2022, comprising as much as 10 percent of all reported hate crime offenses in the most recently observed year of 2022. During these five years, over 30 percent of juvenile victims of hate crime experienced the offense at school, and nearly 36 percent of juvenile offenders of hate crime committed the offense at school." Additionally, "from 2018 through 2022, the most common bias type of reported hate crime offenses at schools was Anti-Black or African American, with 1,690 reported hate crime offenses involving this bias type during the observed five years, followed by Anti-Jewish (745 offenses), and Anti-Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (Mixed Group) (342 offenses)." Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents in Pekin on March 14th

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents on March 14th in Pekin, IL.

This training provides attendees comprehensive education on the subject of communications. Throughout the training, attendees will learn about the importance of building relationships with the media and the community through routine communications. The training will also provide guidance on how to prepare for a crisis communications event and what to do should that day happen. Finally, instruction will wrap up with discussion on how to effectively communicate after a critical incident.

Upcoming Session of Digital Threat Assessment® March 15th via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Digital Threat Assessment® on March 15th being held via Zoom.

The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications.

Upcoming Session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd being held via Zoom.

Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.

Upcoming Session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ May 8th in Springfield

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ on May 8th being held in Springfield, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.

Lake County Safety Conference March 4, 2024

The Lake County Regional Office of Education, Sheriff's Department, and State's Attorney's Office are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the annual Lake County School Safety Conference and Expo! The conference will be held in-person at Warren Township High School- Almond Campus and it is FREE to all participants.
