What's Happening this Week: Business Meeting
Message from President Billie Araiza
Greetings!

What a busy week we have had (Soroptimist Committee Meetings, Bev’s Celebration of Life, and our SNR District 1 Winter Meeting). Thank you to all our club members who attended at least one of the above events. A big thank you to those who attended 2 of the above events. A “HUGE Thank You” to those members who attended all 3 events last week!

I would also like to thank all the committee members that worked on Bev’s Celebration of Life. It was one of those bittersweet moments. I enjoyed listening to everyone share their memories of Bev. Her contributions to SI Chico will always live on in our hearts and our minds. She will never be forgotten.

We will be doing a joint SUDS with SI Bidwell Rancho on Saturday, February 13, 2021, at 5 pm on Zoom. It will be a Galentine’s Day theme so mark your calendars to join in the fun! The Zoom link and more information on it can be found further down in this E-blast.

This Wednesday is our club Business Meeting, please join us on Zoom. As always, I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces.

With Gratitude,

President Billie

Celebration of Life in honor of Bev
article written by: Bonnie Chapman

Please find the link for the video recording for the Celebration of Life in honor of Bev here in this E-blast. For those who missed it, and would like to watch, please do. A few take-away’s from this experience;
*Bev sure had a special way of touching our hearts. It was apparent that she was able to have a genuinely close and important relationship with all of us. We know this from the many stories shared by a huge array of the 50 attendee’s of the celebration. This is a rare quality.
*She would have loved the celebration. It was real...included many laughs...great sharing of the best memories made with her and full of the warmest deepest friendship recollections.
*It affirmed one of the most important reasons to be a Soroptimist. The camaraderie on that Zoom call was undeniable and the pure goodness in “seeing” one another felt like home, and certainly made us all feel better despite the reason for the gathering. Let’s carry this truth as we move forward and look to rebuilding a new normal in our club post-pandemic. We are lucky to be part of this great group of wonderful women.
*Bev knew how to have fun and we should all take a lesson. Make the most of each day, add some fun, laughter, zest, spice and top it with a great smile...just like Bev would.

Click here to watch the celebration. You can scroll through the chats while watching the celebration, plus if you would like to save it, you can download it as an MP4 video.

February Senior Moment of the Month, Patricia Cockcroft
Patricia Cockcroft was born in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire and it is where she spent her early life but moved to the Unites States during WWII. She has enjoyed sixty-three years of service in Soroptimist and at the young age of ninety-two, was made an honorary member.

Patricia had a childhood unlike we have experienced. She grew up in a volatile time during WWII. By the time she was ten, she and her family experienced nightly bombings and spent hours in bomb shelters daily. Her family kept their clothes at the bedside and rarely slept in case they needed to leave in a hurry. Her parents finally decided to evacuate her along with her friend, Nancy Evans, to the country at the tender age of ten with their gas masks in hand. Next, she traveled to a small seaside resort, Bridlington on the north coast. There, she lived in a beautiful, four story Victorian house with her aunt, two nieces, two cousins, and a housekeeper from the time the war broke out until the time she was shipped to America. It was in 1940 her and her mother boarded a freighter and sailed to the states to live with her aunt in San Francisco. She attended school in Burlingame and eventually made her way to San Mateo.

After graduation and a few years later in San Mateo, she married at the age of twenty-four. Around 1952 a friend invited her to a Soroptimist meeting where they had lunch and tea at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. She joined the Soroptimist where she has been the secretary and served as President twice. In 1954, she also invited a good friend to join her for lunch who we all know, Violet Richardson Ward. The rest is history!

One of the committees she was not involved in but existed at that time, was Operation Sky Watch at the Disabler Apartments in San Mateo where they took turns watching the skies for foreign planes. They also sponsored foreign students where she remembers the names O.D. Phillips and Benta Arub. They held fashion shows where members of three other clubs, including San Bruno where the ladies would model gowns to sell. Among other fundraising events were antique shows and playing cards. They also had a booth at the San Mateo fair to give out information about the Soroptimist.

Some of her fondest memories were the song they used to sing at their meetings and of course all the correspondence - all done by mimeograph unlike the E-blast we have today. As she stated so eloquently, "there are a mix of doers and givers in this life and you have to make the best of both".

LIVE YOUR DREAM (2020-2021) Runner Up - Madison Greb

Meet Madison, one of our Live Your Dream runner-up winners for 2020-2021

Madison is a busy student and mother of a beautiful 4-year old, Jude. She is scheduled to graduate from CSUC with her BA degree in Business Administration and Sales in May, and is looking forward to getting into the business world, even though it is a bit scary, and is looking forward to the career fair in March. She is especially excited about her training in the Seufferlein Sales Program – College of Business, CSU, Chico.

Madison said that after her son was born, she decided to return to school so that she could create a more financially secure home for her son. She enrolled in Butte College and received AS degrees in Business and Behavioral Science.

Madison’s references describe her as motivated, inspirational, excelling, organized, tenacious, excellent role model with a love of learning and a contagious smile.  I could certainly see all of those traits when I met with her over a cup of coffee.

Madison really appreciates the $1,000.00 that comes along with this award, and is looking forward to attending our Zoom award presentation on April 21 to thank SI Chico personally.

Interestingly, Madison applied to the LYD award program last year, but was not one of the finalists – so she reapplied this year. I also like to ask exactly how they found out about our LYD award program, and she said that she saw it on Facebook. It was one of the posts that we shared, so ladies, it is working. Thank you for your shares.

Thank you for the opportunity to chair the Live Your Dream awards this year. It is always a privilege to meet these amazing young women, and I look forward to introducing all of them to you on April 21.
