SI Chico E-blast news & more
Feb. 4, 2020 | Volume 20 Issue 25
Message from President
Carrie Pavis
Buenos Dias Mi Hermanas Soroptimist!
Hello February! This message comes to you on my last day in Mexico. It has been a great getaway and I’m ready to hit the ground running with this week’s Business Meeting. A reminder to check the details in this E-blast about getting registered to watch the District 1 & 2 Winter Webinar this coming Saturday, February 8. It’s free and easy to connect once you register via a code you enter in the computer. The meeting will run from 9:00-Noon.

At the Business Meeting, I will be announcing our wonderful members who have stepped up to be on the Nominating Committee that will create next year’s Board. Sandi Decker, Stephanie Giacovelli and Vanessa Haro are our three superstars. If anyone else if interested in serving in this capacity, please contact me before Wednesday’s Business Meeting.

Thanks everyone!

President,
Our meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, February 8, 9-Noon , using GoToMeeting. Our SNR District 1 Winter Webinar and SNR District 2 Winter Webinar online registration link is:

We will be available to help you with simple connection concerns in the hour/half-hour before the meeting begins promptly at 9am.

Using the email addresses we receive through the online registration process  WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH LOGIN and CODE as soon as possible, but you can be planning your watch party or private viewing now. Remember, as Director Terrel said

All you need is a computer screen, a phone, and internet access

We have scheduled 7.5 to 10 minutes per Club President (or designated representative) to speak. We'll be breaking up these club updates with bits of relevant info from SNR, SIA, and SI, drawings, fun etc. Try to be respectful of the time you use to make your report, especially if you are asking for input from the other clubs. We have 18 clubs, and while we've made this very easy to attend, not all clubs will participate.
Nevertheless, be concise, and think about the highlights; what would you like to sit through hearing about from 17 other reports just like yours. You do not have to make a report; you don't need to take up your full time and most clubs won't. Extra time allows for extra discussions.  LET ME KNOW IF YOU'D LIKE TO GIVE A REPORT so I can schedule you into a reserved time slot.

Make this  FUN ! This might be a fabulous opportunity to have a " Friend -raiser" for club groups, or allow you to listen in solo...whatever works best. Food and snacks up the  FUN  level!

February Member of the Month is Daran Goodsell

No one has ever accused me of not being able to chat. I can usually find something to talk about with whoever is around me at any given time. I have found that asking questions is always a good thing, especially when you ask people about themselves. Given my social and curious nature, it would probably come as no surprise to anyone that my major was in communications; specifically in Public Relations, Media, and Event Planning.

I came to Chico State from the Bay Area in 1977 to attend college and never left. Since 1980 I have worked in the local media and arts fields, including working at the Chico News & Review, KHSL/KNVN TV, KPAY/KMXI Radio, Chico City Light Opera, and, for the last 24 years, as the director of Marketing/Publicity and Corporate Sponsorships for University Public Engagement at Chico State. During my time at Chico State it was my job to get the word out about all the great performances at Laxson Auditorium courtesy of Chico Performances, and to handle several major aspects of the University’s Commencement ceremonies, among other duties.

I loved my work at Chico Performances. How many positions afford you the ability to listen to world class music, meet famous artists and speakers, interact with media, plan large events, and give you a great retirement? My kids were raised in Laxson Auditorium at Chico State (they were 1 and 4 when I started there) and I met my husband when my department hired him 16 years ago to be the production manager and work with me planning events. Not really love at first sight, but, well, after a year, I can just say we were not only partners at work, we were partners in life. He’s the quiet, good looking one in our marriage.

Most of you know I was a Soroptimist in the early 2000’s, and that I had to give it up when we combined families – going from two to five kids was a big commitment. I am proud to say they all graduated from college and have become responsible adults. Our jobs in the family raising department done, my husband and I retired last year from the university jobs to enjoy other pursuits – such as traveling, home remodel projects, caring for older parents, grandbabies, and volunteering.

My interests include dogs – I have 3 (terriers and labs!), travel, my family, talking to people, and teaching – I currently returned from retirement to teach one class to Chico State seniors – “Advertising Campaigns.” I’m so happy to be able to have the time to reconnect with my Soroptimist Family and do service. Thanks for welcoming me; here’s to many wonderful chats in the future.

Congratulations Daran for being our February Member of the Month!

44th Sierra Nevada Region Conference
April 24-26, 2020
at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, Reno Nevada
Can you believe it! Conference is just around the corner. Last year was a great conference and we are striving to make this year’s conference even better. Most notable, we will vote for the officers and directors who will lead the Region in the next biennium. We will have the presentation of the Region’s business and recognitions. Our Official Visitor will be SIA Board Member Elizabeth “BJ” Gallagher. We are also fortunate to have a SIA Board Member Elect Stephanie Smith who will provide invaluable developmental sessions. We promise that Friday’s entertainment will not be a mystery; but it remains a secret for the moment.

The room block will be open on January 15, 2020.  You can make your room reservations at the Atlantis by calling the Reservations Department at (800) 723-6500 and provide group code  SISNR20.  You can also book online by clicking  here .

We are still looking for a few good sponsors. The success of our conference is dependent on securing sponsors. Please assist the Region and give us recommendations for sponsors. I received no response to the notice in the last E-Blast. The Sponsorship Packet is available  here .

I will be reaching out in February to those who signed up at Fall District Meetings to help with conference. I could still use more volunteers.

If you are interested in being a sponsor at conference or helping at conference, please send me an email at  snrgovelect@soroptimistsnr.org .

Here is my message to each of you, the Sierra Nevada Region is a village comprised of 55 clubs with members who are strong, talented, giving and supportive in helping women and girls in our communities and globally. I appreciate all that each member has accomplished, what you are doing now and what you will do in the future. It is all of us who make conferences successful; please help in any way you can. Get me sponsors or get me volunteers, I need both.

I look forward to having fun with all of you at Conference!

Conference Coordinator/Governor Elect
Sitting on the fence about attending the 46 Annual SIA Convention in Bellevue? It’s certainly not too late to register. And whether you’ve already registered, or planning to do it soon, I want to remind everyone interested about a fun (affordable)  Grand West Coast Train Adventure to Washington. Let the good times roll immediately on an adventure with Soroptimists from our own Sierra Nevada Region! The California gang will hop on the train in Sacramento, Chico, Redding and Dunsmuir stations, with Nevada Soroptimists able to enjoy an extended, incredibly scenic, departure from Elko, Winnemucca, Reno, Truckee, Colfax and Roseville stations, meeting up in Sacramento to head north. That’s right, we’ll all be on the same train, having a BLAST, with plenty of friendship and fun.
