Message from President Billie Araiza

Greetings!
I thought we could celebrate “Galentine’s Day” all week long. We have so many wonderful Gal’s in our club and I’m so grateful to know all of you. I’m looking forward to celebrating Galentine’s Day with you during our joint SUDS with SI Bidwell Rancho this Saturday on Zoom at 5 pm. Don’t forget to wear your favorite Galentine's bling! The Zoom link is further down in this eblast.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to join us last Wednesday on Zoom for our club Business Meeting. It’s vital our Club members and Board members attend our business meetings. Our Business Meetings provide the opportunity to stay updated on what is happening with our local Clubs, Region, and SIA. We also need a quorum to vote on all motions, so they can be processed as quickly as possible. I appreciate all the members who filled out the SurveyMonkey after the meeting. I’m happy to announce that Motion 23 passed.
There are still several dates available for members to sign up to deliver dinner to Linda Allen and Gayle Hutchinson. Linda is recovering from her second knee surgery. Please look at the Signup Genius and sign up to help ease some of the burdens for Linda during her recovery. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409084da9a82ba7ff2-meals1
I hope all of you can join us this Wednesday while we celebrate this year’s scholarship awardees. The Giving Committee has put together a nice program to help honor all the awardees. Please log into Zoom a little early so we can start our Awards Program on time. I’m looking forward to celebrating their successes with you.
With Gratitude,
President Billie

Join us for a fun afternoon of painting in our Paint and Sip Virtual Class Fundraiser on Saturday, March 13th at 3:00pm. Local artist Christine Mac Shane will be guiding us live in a step-by-step Zoom class while we sip on wine (or your favorite drink) and create our watercolor masterpiece. No artistic talent necessary, Christine makes the class easy enough for beginners and provides all the materials needed or feel free to use your own. Invite your spouse and kids to join and make it a family event or share the purchase link with a friend so they could sign up and join us virtually. Please pay for all participants, even if they are in the same household and painting alongside you. The deadline to sign-up is Sunday, March 7th so visit our purchase website now www.givebutter.com/SICpaintandsip or click on the picture.
We hope to see you virtually for this fun social event!

February Senior Moment of the Month, Patricia Cockcroft
|
Patricia Cockcroft was born in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire and it is where she spent her early life but moved to the Unites States during WWII. She has enjoyed sixty-three years of service in Soroptimist and at the young age of ninety-two, was made an honorary member.
Patricia had a childhood unlike we have experienced. She grew up in a volatile time during WWII. By the time she was ten, she and her family experienced nightly bombings and spent hours in bomb shelters daily. Her family kept their clothes at the bedside and rarely slept in case they needed to leave in a hurry. Her parents finally decided to evacuate her along with her friend, Nancy Evans, to the country at the tender age of ten with their gas masks in hand. Next, she traveled to a small seaside resort, Bridlington on the north coast. There, she lived in a beautiful, four story Victorian house with her aunt, two nieces, two cousins, and a housekeeper from the time the war broke out until the time she was shipped to America. It was in 1940 her and her mother boarded a freighter and sailed to the states to live with her aunt in San Francisco. She attended school in Burlingame and eventually made her way to San Mateo.
After graduation and a few years later in San Mateo, she married at the age of twenty-four. Around 1952 a friend invited her to a Soroptimist meeting where they had lunch and tea at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. She joined the Soroptimist where she has been the secretary and served as President twice. In 1954, she also invited a good friend to join her for lunch who we all know, Violet Richardson Ward. The rest is history!
One of the committees she was not involved in but existed at that time, was Operation Sky Watch at the Disabler Apartments in San Mateo where they took turns watching the skies for foreign planes. They also sponsored foreign students where she remembers the names O.D. Phillips and Benta Arub. They held fashion shows where members of three other clubs, including San Bruno where the ladies would model gowns to sell. Among other fundraising events were antique shows and playing cards. They also had a booth at the San Mateo fair to give out information about the Soroptimist.
Some of her fondest memories were the song they used to sing at their meetings and of course all the correspondence - all done by mimeograph unlike the E-blast we have today. As she stated so eloquently, "there are a mix of doers and givers in this life and you have to make the best of both".
