Cohousing: A Growing Concept in Communal Living
by Ronda Kaysen for AARP
"I recognized right away that the feeling of community was the piece I’ve been missing all these years.”
- Kay Stewart, Oakcreek Resident
"Cohousing is no hippie commune — no need to pull out the patchouli or tie-dye that you stashed away after the Summer of Love — but it does share some collective principles. Neighbors are expected to pitch in, not only to maintain the common areas but also to help each other with life’s challenges.

Interest in cohousing is on the rise,  particularly among boomers. "It seems to be the senior population that’s really like, ‘Hey, this is a great idea,' said Karin Hoskin, executive director of the Cohousing Association of the United States, adding that 15 new senior cohousing communities are being planned across the country" and CoHousing Solutions has worked or is currently working with many of them. To name a few... Oakcreek Community in Stillwater, OK (featured above); Village Hearth Cohousing in Durham, NC; PDX Commons in Portland, OR; Wolf Creek Lodge in Grass Valley, CA; and Quimper Village in Port Townsend, WA.
Attend the Regional Conference in Boulder
Discover how you can live a powerful purposeful life in cohousing
Come out to Boulder this April to network with other cohousing group members & professionals, learn from the speakers at the variety of workshops, make amazing connections, and take home inspiration.
Katie McCamant will be a special guest at the conference, leading multiple workshops and presentations: you won’t want to miss her keynote presentation on Friday evening.

Also on Friday, she’ll be leading two half-day intensives with Jim Leach - a morning intensive workshop “Cohousing Development 101” and a half-day afternoon intensive for professionals: “Creating Community Based Affordable Housing.”

For those interested in the 500 Communities Program, be sure to attend the 1-hour workshop on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Katie will be leading a 3 hour "Unplugged" session, where you can come with your questions and learn from the expert!

Bethany will be in attendance as well, so make sure to say hi and ask her to tell you about our marketing and outreach services for cohousing groups.
Colorado is home to numerous cohousing communities...
Should you attend the conference, you can get up close and personal on a variety of special tours. One of the communities you could see on a tour is actually a former convent! Check out Aria Cohousing, the community featured in this article from the Denver Post.
500 Communities Program
Affiliate Spotlight: Darryl Berlin
Darryl on the construction site of Fair Oaks EcoHousing
Darryl recently graduated from CoHousing Solutions’ yearlong training, the 500 Communities Program, and is now a CoHousing Solutions Affiliate. Darryl has practiced the art of natural building for over 20 years. Through his work as a builder, design consultant, community member and educator, he is able to merge his passions for fine craft, ecological stewardship, relationship to place and social justice, all while getting in the mud and building homes.

He’s currently employed as the Construction Project Manager for Fair Oaks EcoHousing, where the site is muddy but not the homes!
Darryl's Perspective on the Program
"Katie McCamant has been a bold visionary in bringing a new model of developing sustainable communities to our neighborhoods, simply called Cohousing. She has now expanded that vision, with the goal of establishing 500 cohousing communities across the U.S. I consider myself lucky to have been part of the 1 st cohort of 500 Communities Affiliates. From forming new groups, to finding sites, understanding the financial requirements of real estate development, to celebrating the creation of new communities successfully getting it built, the training covers all that and more!

I now find myself applying many of the lessons and direct experience Katie has to offer by working as an Owner’s Representative for Fair Oaks EcoHousing, a Cohousing development under construction with a move-in date of 2019."
