A lot has happened in the past two and a half weeks at the national and state levels. It’s difficult to keep up with the volume of information coming at us.
Our position at Lakes Region Mental Health will always be “slow and steady wins the race”. We will not react in the moment, but continue to make carefully measured decisions- the same kind that have helped us to remain stable since 1966.
Lakes Region Mental Health Center has been through ups and downs over the years but has always remained steady, resilient, and responsive to the needs of our community.
Our stability is due to many things:
· Staff that are passionate about what we do and believe all people deserve care.
· Staff and a board of directors who will advocate for that care.
· Leadership and a finance team that is strategic about diversifying revenue so that we continue to remain financially stable.
All 10 Community Mental Health Centers in the state are active participants in advocacy at the state, and sometimes national, levels. As President of the Association, I am often called upon to give testimony on legislation that affects the mental health community. So are leaders of the other centers.
Our Management Team here at LRMHC recently discussed how we can keep our staff and community more informed, to help sift through information that is coming at us rapidly. As a result, we have committed to increasing our internal and external communications.
Advocacy requires a lot of voices. It requires active participation and hearing the voices of those in our state whom the legislators represent. It may require the voices of some of our staff, our board members, and our patients and their families.
If you want to help, subscribe and follow organizations like New Futures, a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to educate Granite Staters about public policy change and civic empowerment. New Futures puts out frequent updates and gives directions on how to submit testimony.
If you have questions at any time, please reach out. As in the past, we will get through any challenge by practicing “slow and steady”, coming together, communicating more, and will be stronger because of it.
