Description:

Disruptive life experiences like death and divorce can leave children without language to describe the experience. Aspects of their experience can be hidden, even from themselves. During the Narrative Art Journaling process the child tells their story on various pages using pictures and other creative modalities in play therapy. They get the opportunity to ‘create’ and ‘re-create’ their story during directive play therapy.

This process has been used in play therapy with success to help children to reconstruct their personal narratives as they reflect on the pages they create. It helps to untangle their confusing thoughts, honor their experience, and explore their continuing narrative as they become compassionate witnesses of their own story. When the process is used with groups, and group play therapy, members become compassionate witnesses to each other’s stories.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the function of the play therapist or counselor in a Narrative Art Journaling Process
  • Identify how stories are ‘created’ in a journal using pictures and creative modalities as participants create their journals during directive play therapy sessions
  • Explain how the story is deconstructed into more manageable parts
  • State how problems/challenges/obstacles are identified and externalized through externalizing conversations in play therapy
  • Describe how alternative stories in play therapy are identified
  • State how a story can be re-storied from play therapy perspective
