This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to information for Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, shares information on the Lake County School Safety Conference, and provides information on several upcoming trainings including: Effective Communication Principles, Digital Threat Assessment®, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®, Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, and Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. According to loveisrespect.org, "1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience physical, sexual, or emotional abuse from someone they’re in a relationship with before becoming adults. Lake County School Safety Conference March 4, 2024

The Lake County School Safety Conference will be on Monday, March 4, 2024, at Warren Township High School- Almond Campus, 34090 Almond Rd, Gurnee, IL 60031. The day will start at 8am with introductions and morning keynote presentation. There will be a variety of breakouts from local and national experts, as well as a lunch keynote. This conference is open to all counties and the target audience includes administration, safety committee, counselors, social workers, deans, student services, SRO, police, and fire. PD hours and CEU hours are available. The conference is free to all participants and the registration is open until Thursday, February 29th. Fore more information and to register, click here.

Upcoming Session of Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations March 4-5th in Plainfield

This is the last chance to register for the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class March 4-5, 2024, in Plainfield, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.
• Learn how to obtain IP's, screen names, screen captures, and email headers.
• State laws: Terrorist Threat, Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat, Swatting, and Causing a Catastrophe.
• Suspect search warrant, arrest, interrogation, and mental health evaluation.
• Examine a successful cyber-crime case study investigation from start to finish.

Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents in Pekin on March 14th

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents on March 14th in Pekin, IL.

This training provides attendees comprehensive education on the subject of communications. Throughout the training, attendees will learn about the importance of building relationships with the media and the community through routine communications. The training will also provide guidance on how to prepare for a crisis communications event and what to do should that day happen. Finally, instruction will wrap up with discussion on how to effectively communicate after a critical incident.

Upcoming Session of Digital Threat Assessment® March 15th via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Digital Threat Assessment® on March 15th being held via Zoom.

The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications.

Upcoming Session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd being held via Zoom.

Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.

Upcoming Session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ May 8th in Springfield

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ on May 8th being held in Springfield, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.
