GOOD WORKS

NWCA Good Works Segment

Each month, we recognize a group, neighbor, or individual who has made a meaningful difference in our community. This may include a volunteer, charity, business, fundraiser, or activity that helps keep the Westside special. To nominate someone for recognition, please email us at eventsnwca@gmail.com

Fire Fighter of the Year – Gordie Henderson

This is one of the biggest honours a Hall can give — and this year, it belongs to Gordie Henderson.

Chosen by a vote of his fellow firefighters at the North Westside Fire and Rescue, being named Firefighter of the Year is about more than performance — it’s about respect. And Gordie, without a doubt, earned it.

Gordie is the kind of firefighter every department hopes to have. When the tones drop, he answers. When there’s work to be done, he steps up. Training nights, emergency calls, extra help behind the scenes, supporting his fellow members — Gordie is always there, no questions asked. His dedication to the community runs deep, and his commitment to the fire service is driven by genuine passion, not recognition. He gives his time freely, leads by example, and never hesitates to put the needs of others first.

As if that wasn’t enough, Gordie also received the Shawn Barnes Exemplary Attendance Award — This award celebrates firefighters who demonstrate outstanding commitment and dependability through exceptional attendance. Gordie did this by personally attending the most calls over the entire year. Simply put: when the community needed help, Gordie showed up, more than anyone else.

This isn’t just about numbers or titles. It’s about commitment, sacrifice, and a love for his community. Gordie represents what this department stands for and sets the standard for what it means to truly SERVE. The rest of us have huge footsteps to follow in.

Congratulations, Gordie, on an outstanding year and two incredible, well-deserved awards. Our department is stronger because of you and our community is better protected because you’re in it.
