Hazel Orlene Smiedala

OCTOBER 5, 1944 – DECEMBER 25, 2019
It is with great sadness, that the family of Hazel Orlene Smiedala announce her passing on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at the age of 81. She was born March 31, 1938 in Ulysses, PA, to Howard and Lillian (Furman) Brown. Hazel graduated from Northern Potter Joint High School on May 29, 1957. Hazel resided in Irvington, AL where she leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, John Smiedala. Hazel will be lovingly remembered by her children Theodore Smiedala, Ronald Smiedala, and Jacqueline Neuner (Smiedala), as well as her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Hazel is survived by her brothers Robert Brown, Herb Brown, Richard Brown, Kenneth Brown, Tom Brown, several nieces, and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death by her mother Lillian Brown, sister Dorothy (Fuller) Brown, and brother Archie Brown. A native of PA, Hazel moved to Niagara Falls, NY, where she fell in love with her husband John. They were married at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, Central Park West at 65th Street New York City on October 6, 1958, while John was on his US Army 3-day pass. The Smiedala's were living in New Orleans in the shadow of the superdome when John was assigned by the Exxon Corporation Quality Assurance to a job at a facility in New Florence, PA. When John was laid off, they invested in a corner property and established an eatery and pizza shop, which they named "Hazel's Eatery and Pizza Shop". Hazel offered catering to the local businesses and Conemaugh Power Station. Hazel's homestyle cooking became the informal Breakfast Club in New Florence. The daily newspaper was not needed, all news and complaints were gathered at Hazel's, and she enjoyed every minute of it. In 1998, they closed Hazel's and moved back to their beautiful home in Irvington, Alabama. Hazel loved to take care of her beautiful lined yard of Azalea's and several fruit trees, as well as sitting on her porch drinking coffee with family and friends. She referred to her home as her own slice of paradise. She will be remembered for her love for cooking, and the beautiful impression of a lighthearted spirit to everyone she crosses paths with. Hazel enjoyed her life and loved her family unconditionally. A Celebration of Hazel's Life will be held Serenity Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 from 12 noon to 2pm.
