Meet SCC's New Director of Volunteers

We are thrilled to introduce Andrea McRorie to the SCC family. She is bright, tech-savvy, personable, and a joy to be around. Between paid work, volunteer projects, a variety of interests, and a husband and two teenagers, she leads a full life. Fortunately, she has the organizational skills and abundant energy to do an excellent job of it. Already she has made such a difference in our operation.

Her ease with it probably has something to do with her having developed and run the volunteer program for Good Will for several years. She's also done community work for a law firm, and still has a side business as a highly successful fund-raiser/event planner. She has everything it takes to use your ideas and talents to the fullest, make the most of our volunteer program, and take our organization to the next level. Welcome, Andrea!

"SCC has such a strong volunteer base- people that genuinely want to make an impact in the lives of others. It will be cool to connect them with members and be a part of forming those friendships." - Andrea McRorie

All Fun & Games

This past month, we met at the Senior Center (inside the Rec Center) to play Cribbage and Mexican Train Dominoes. It was so fun to play, laugh, and enjoy time together in this new space. We hope to see you at the next gathering , where there will be more crafts, games, and memories to make! No skills necessary. We'll be there every 3rd Wednesday at 1pm. Volunteers and game teachers welcome!

Each month, we hope to highlight one of our special board members. The idea is to give a glimpse into SCC’s leadership for new members and volunteers. And add a little fun for those who have been a part of SCC for a while now! Please enjoy this Q&A with our Outreach Director!

Your favorite game or sport:

My favorite sport to watch is women’s college basketball (Go Gamecocks!). My husband and I also enjoy going to Davidson College games. My favorite sport to play is pickleball. I played field hockey in high school and college.

Who's your hero?

I like to think about everyday people doing their best, rather than naming particular individuals. My favorite quote below speaks to this.

Your favorite book:

I am an avid reader, so have many. One of my long time favorites is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. A recent favorite that I read as part of my book club is Their Eyes Were Watching God.

A good movie you have recently watched:

I enjoy going to the movies, but haven’t seen an exceptionally good one lately. Two things I enjoyed recently at home were Dopesick and Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.

Your favorite local spot to eat:

I like many spots and enjoy trying new places. My favorite local restaurant so far is Choplin’s.

Your favorite vacation spot:

I like to explore new places and am enjoying visiting new places in the southeast. My favorite recent trips were to Beaufort, SC and Newport, RI.

What words do you live by?

I don’t really have any, but a favorite quote is,

"The women whom I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because stuff worked out. They got that way because stuff went wrong, and they handled it. They handled it in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days. But they handled it. Those women are my superheroes." Elizabeth Gilbert

Aging Wide Awake, Meditation Circle- Tuesdays- 10:15- 11:00am on Zoom. We live in a culture where most avoid any talk about aging unless it's about how to defy it. Our weekly meditation circle takes a different approach. We regard our older years as an opportunity to grow. Through exploration of ancient and contemporary wisdom writings and meaningful conversations, we nurture and deepen connections with one another. Curious? Join us! It is open and FREE to all. Send an email to Laurie at laurie1059@gmail.com to register.
