February's featured titles include a story of sisterhood, trauma, and the power of the sea, paired with Irish potato farls and Australian pavlova. A romantasy set in a magical academy, where hearty meals like hot pot and seafood chowder are dining hall favorites. And a novel where old loves and friendships are rekindled over comfort foods — including vegetarian shepherd’s pie, braised lentils, and cabbage au gratin.

And don't miss new book club menus from Maggie; or, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar and Family of Spies.

Novel Noshes: Ask the Author

Authors Share Book-Inspired Fare

Thanks to authors Katie Yee and Christine Kuehn who recently shared book club menus for our readers.

In Katie Yee's novel Maggie: Or, a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar, a Chinese American woman spins tragedy into comedy when her life falls apart.

From Katie Yee: “The most notable food in the novel is probably a samosa. It's what our narrator is eating when her husband reveals that he's been having an affair. I have admittedly never tried to make them myself, so I'm afraid I don't have a good recipe on hand for you! Other foods mentioned: banana splits, giant soft pretzels. Drinks mentioned: Bloody Marys and spicy margaritas".

Christine Kuehn's Family of Spies is the story of her family's involvement as spies during World War II and the pivotal role they played in the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

From Christine Kuehn:
"Family of Spies takes place in both Germany and Hawaii, so there are several directions you could take with the menu. For a taste of Germany, Beer & Brats is a great theme. Serve German beer or wine, bratwurst with sauerkraut, German potato salad, and Bavarian pretzels. For dessert, the famous German chocolate cake is Black Forest Cake. While German Chocolate Cake isn’t actually German, it’s delicious—and if you use the recipe calling for sauerkraut, you can probably pull it off. If you prefer a non-chocolate option, Kuchen is always a wonderful choice. For a sit-down dinner, consider Wiener schnitzel served with noodles, a beet salad, and crusty bread. For a taste of Hawaii, serve Mai Tais or strawberry daiquiris, with or without alcohol. For something uniquely Hawaiian, try Spam musubi—Spam is a staple in Hawaii. If Spam doesn’t sound appealing, there are plenty of alternatives, such as bacon-wrapped pineapple bites, ahi poke salad, grilled pineapple, huli huli chicken, or Kalua pork sandwiches. Rice is always a staple in Hawaiian cuisine, so serve your favorite and consider adding pineapple. For dessert, try pineapple upside-down cake or malasadas. Sushi can also add a subtle Japanese influence."
