'Sisters" by Berthe Morisot

President's Letter

The Sisters by French artist Berthe Morisot is currently on view at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, but many Docents were recently able to see some other Morisot paintings at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. This particular painting by Morisot makes me think about those relationships that carry a strong bond. Whether it is sisters, brothers, children, or friends, we all have those people that we admire and understand in a way that holds high value. This month, February, is the month of love. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on all the different places we can feel connection and appreciation. Thanks to the Art Docents of Los Gatos, we all have the opportunity to form a bond of friendship in our collaborative effort to bring art to all children. Thank you to all the Docents who continually make this a wonderful place to make friends and nurture creativity and education. I appreciate every one of you!

Guest Artist Program

We were excited to kick off our Guest Artist Program last week at Blossom Hill Elementary, followed by visits to Lexington, Daves, and Van Meter this week!

Our elementary schools had the opportunity to host Guest Artist Melissa Marzan, a Santa Cruz–based hand lettering and illustration artist also known as The Letter Mermaid.

Melissa is a successful creative professional who runs her own business and works as a Graphic Artist for NBC Sports Bay Area & California, showing our students that art can be a meaningful and viable career.

With a background in Design and Psychology from UC Davis, Melissa shared how art can create emotional impact and connection. Her work - ranging from murals and live lettering to public, interactive art along with her message of courage, creativity, and self-worth, resonated deeply with students.

We are incredibly lucky to expose our students to artists like Melissa. Watching them connect with a working artist and imagine creating something lasting of their own was truly special. Thank you to our Guest Artist Committee for making this experience possible for our LGUSD students.

Workshops

Docents please keep an eye out for upcoming workshop schedules. We will be hosting our TK Texture, Kinder Sculpture, 5th Grade Mosaic and 6th Grade Big Data Workshops this Spring. We need volunteers for leads and helpers! Please see our website for sign ups.

Volunteer Highlight

This month, the Art Docents would like to highlight Alyce Athanasiou and Hillary Revel. Alyce and Hillary are relatively new Art Docent members, both having completed their training in December 2025.

Alyce, a retired ICU nurse and proud grandmother, is a valued member of our Art Show Committee and has been consistently showing up week after week to help prepare for the upcoming show. Though she humbly claims she’s not very computer-savvy, Alyce stepped well outside her comfort zone by signing up to teach a digital lesson - something we are incredibly proud of. She is reliable, committed, and someone we can always count on.

We asked Alyce what her favorite part of being in the docents was and she responded "I enjoy being an art docent because I can give back to the community and somehow, I am getting back more than I’m even giving! I’ve learned a great deal about art and organizational skills. I have felt that it’s a welcoming environment to new people who may have new ideas and that there’s a constant striving to be even better."

Hillary Revel is a member of our Guest Artist Committee and played an integral role in our first Guest Artist visit last week as well as plannoing for this week's visits at Lexington, Daves and Van Meter. What truly stands out is that Hillary signed up to teach workshops right away—something many new trainees understandably hesitate to take on at first. Along with teaching lessons, she brings enthusiasm, confidence, and a consistently positive attitude, always with a smile.

We are so grateful to have Hillary and Alyce as part of our docent community!

Continuing Education

Manet & Morisot at Legion of Honor

The Continuing Education Committee enjoyed an inspiring visit to the Manet and Morisot exhibition at the Legion of Honor, deepening their connection to artists featured in our middle school French curriculum. These firsthand experiences directly enhance the way we bring art history to life for our middle school students at Fisher Middle School.

Yoga and Art on the Beach

The Art Docents enjoyed a joyful Art and Yoga Retreat in Santa Cruz. Thank you to our Guest Artist and Hospitality committee for planning such a special day for our docents to Michelle Abene for donating her home and Izzy Delling for leading a hands on art class inspired by the ocean. This special gathering was a heartfelt way to show appreciation for the Art Docents and the time and energy they give to the students of the LGUSD. Thank you to everyone who donated their talents.
