Community eNews | February 1, 2026 | | A Message from the Presidents of Carondelet & De La Salle: | |
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Nationwide conversations capture our attention, and our young people’s, too. As you may be aware, student walkouts have occurred across the country connected to the unrest in Minneapolis, as well as broader national conversations around justice, immigration, and human dignity.
Locally, students have been discussing the possibility of participating in a walkout this Wednesday, February 4. Carondelet and De La Salle High Schools have not approved a student walkout. As the primary educators of your child, we encourage you to have a conversation with your child(ren) and help them make thoughtful choices, knowing that standard attendance expectations and Student Handbook policies remain in place. Similarly, we want our campuses to remain safe and supportive learning environments and are maintaining close communication between both schools as the situation is fluid. As always, while on campus, student safety remains our utmost responsibility. Students who leave campus are no longer under school supervision and are fully responsible for their own safety.
As Catholic schools, we are guided by Catholic Social Teaching and look to the leadership of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the Sisters of St. Joseph, and the De La Salle Christian Brothers, all who consistently affirm the dignity of every human person and call for compassionate, just, and humane approaches to complex social issues, including immigration. Our faith calls us to help young people grow in conscience, compassion, and thoughtful engagement with the world. Young people are not just tomorrow’s hope; they are today’s, and their voices bring meaningful perspective. As Pope Leo recently shared, “Goodness is disarming. Perhaps this is why God became a child…Nothing has the power to change us as much as a child. Perhaps it is precisely the thought of our children and of others who are equally fragile, that cuts to the heart.”
We affirm our students’ desire to care deeply about the world while also upholding our responsibility as schools to ensure safety, order, and mission alignment. We are grateful for your partnership, trust, and support as we navigate this moment together with care and fidelity to our Catholic mission.
If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your school’s administration.
With gratitude,
Jessica Mix ’99 (President, Cardondelet) and David J. Holquin (President, De La Salle)
