Focus on Student Learning

During Forest Fridays, our 4th and 5th grade environmental science classes are working on student-led projects to answer different questions they have about the Peabody woods system. After a recent trip to the stream behind Peabody School, one group of students is seeking to understand "what the orange muck and oil sheen is in the creek?  Is it natural or a pollutant?"  According to their group's research it appears to be iron oxidizing bacteria which produces a natural oil that can be seen on the surface of the water.  Our students are spending their Friday research time monitoring the point sources to the creek and looking at changes each week.  Ultimately they hope to create a filter system to support cleaner water flow.

Annual Fund - Donor Spotlight

In January 2015, Ms. Wilson and her second grade class warmly welcomed my daughter as a new student to Peabody School.  After the early weeks, I couldn't imagine feeling more grateful; yet two years later, the gratitude brims over.

Peabody School provides what is, for me, the pinnacle of privilege as a parent:  the possibility for my child to spend her school-day life immersed in this magnificent mix of positive energy, curiosity, creativity, kindness, and respect. And academic challenge, too, of course.  The prize, though, is that she experiences all of this in a place that soaks kids with a love and appreciation of who they are right now.

Beyond that I find there is continual balance in the community and environment at Peabody -- which seems really important for our kids. Balance between guidance and freedom, “me” and “we,” empathy and accountability, and flexibility and routine.

Julia’s dad and I describe that Peabody isn't just “school” for Julia, it's her community, and her extended family. I’d say that more than a Peabody student, Julia just feels like a Peabody Person with all the good that implies.

It is my privilege to make this year’s annual fund gift in order to ensure that the amazing adults who, day after day, devote themselves to this wonderful place have the resources they need to maintain the Peabody experience for all students – current and future.

Shoe Drive Success

Hooray! The Shoes for the Homeless shoe drive was a huge success due to the generosity and support of many Peabody families. Peabody collected 155 pairs of new and used shoes of various sizes and styles. Thanks to the efforts of the 6th graders, shoes were counted, sorted and delivered to the local Salvation Army where they will be distributed this Saturday, February 11.

Thank you again for your dedication to improving the lives of those less fortunate.

February SARA Update

8th Grade:
We continued our talk on consent and explored more situations where consent is vital.  This lead up to how to get involved when we see a situation that concerns us.  We revisited the 3D's of intervention: Distract, Direct and Delegate and played a relay game practicing applying them to various situations.

7th Grade:
Seventh grade explored gender norms and stereotypes this week.  We talked about the gender boxes society puts us in and how we are influenced to stay in our boxes.  We starting watching a few commercial clips that took a sometimes comical look at the medias role.  Ask your student about gender boxes!

6th Grade:
6th grade did not have class this week due to the spelling bee.  We will meet  next Monday.
