Gratitude for Profile of a Hillview Graduate Sessions
Mr. Haug and the Hillview Site Council would like to thank the 47 parents who attended either the morning or evening Profile of a Hillview Graduate input sessions on January 30. It was inspiring to see you work together to identify key skills, attitudes, and dispositions that you want to see your students develop during their Hillview years. Staff and students will be practicing an emergency drill called Secure Campus. The drill prepares teachers to be on alert mode when there is a nearby danger, practice closing and locking their doors, and learn how this drill segues into Lockdown drill. We do not plan on practicing a lockdown this time, but we will differentiate the Secure Campus drill from a Lockdown drill for our students.
New Student Advisory
Hillview has developed a new advisory program to address important issues such as respect, compassion, and self-worth. Each month students will have a special program with their teachers. Beginning next week, the topic is honesty and believing in yourself. Each teacher will have a group of advisory students and will continue to work with them through the rest of the year building relationships and a fostering a greater sense of belonging at Hillview. The program was developed in part, based on student feedback collected through SEL surveys, the Expect Respect workshops, California Healthy Kids, and the Asset surveys from Project Cornerstone.
Parent and Community Tech Talk

The Hillview Technology Team is hosting the first Parent and Community Tech Talk. This will be a parent engagement session on the Hillview 1:1 iPad program and a conversation about how to best support our students in making the best use of technology while at the same time minimizing the temptations. Spelling Bee Champion Qualifies for Bay Area Regional Spelling Bee
Congratulations to 8th-grade student, Quinn Follmer, our Hillview Spelling Bee champion. After taking an online test, Quinn qualified for the Bay Area Regional Spelling Bee in Livermore, California. Over 200 school champions took the online test and only 57 moved on the Bay Area Regional Spelling Bee. The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee represents the Bay Area at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. We wish her the best of luck!

8th-Grade Graduation Celebration
Friday, June 14, evening after graduation, Hillview PAC.
The celebration is a long-standing tradition and a memorable event for ALL 8th-grade students. The party is 100% funded and planned by 8th-grade families and not a PTO-sponsored event. We ask for a contribution of $50 per 8th-grade student. Only 23% of our 8th-grade families have donate to date. We also also ask you to consider donating to the scholarship fund to support additional students and to ensure that all costs are covered. All 8th-grade students are welcome regardless of donation. You may make your donation here. If you are also interested in sponsoring any portion of the party (such as the DJ etc.) your support would be greatly appreciated. A presentation by Dr. Naama Barnea-Goraly, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a former Stanford brain researcher. Dr. Barnea-Goraly will present the latest evidence-based research on the effects social media has on youths' mental health and provide recommendations on how to guide your children to
use smartphones and social media without jeopardizing their well-being.
We are pleased to announce a new partnership with local favorite Steve & Kate's Camp, who will provide free onsite childcare for potty-trained children. Steve & Kate's will have games and arts and crafts activities as well as pizza and healthy snacks for all kids in the childcare room.

Parent Booster/Advisory Group
A call to parents to form a group that will work with the director of the Hillview music program to help strengthen and sustain it. This advisory group will examine the as-is state of the Hillview Music Program and dream about what it could be, looking at factors like elementary music enrollment, the challenge of maintaining music as students transition to middle school, and preparing them for participation in high-school music programs. Hillview Quiz Bowl Clubs
Middle School Quiz Bowl Tournaments
Do your kids like the TV show Jeopardy? Do they wish they could hit the buzzer? Now they can! There are three upcoming middle school quiz bowl tournaments this spring. Groups of 3-5 students compete with students from dozens of other area schools. Groups do not all need to be from the same school - it could be a mix of La Entrada, Hillview, Menlo, etc. You don't need to provide the complete group since students will be signing up from other local schools.

Fundraiser for Paradise Fire Victims

Hillview is teaming up with the Menlo-Atherton High School Leo Club for their Fire Aid Drive for Paradise Elementary School. Paradise Elementary needs summer clothing for girls and boys grades Kindergarten to 5th grade, and monetary donations. Please donate here on our GoFundMe. Make checks out to the M-A Leo Club, as the Leo Club will write one big check that includes all of the donations. Checks can go to the Hillview office. There is a bin in the Hillview front office for clothing donations. Questions can be directed here.
After-School Tennis Registration Open

Tryouts to determine Varsity A and Varsity B teams are Sunday, March 3, at Menlo Atherton High School, and on Monday, March 4 - Friday, March 8, at Nealon Park. Once registration is full, your student will be placed on a waiting list. Often waitlisted students are added to the program. Tennis season extends from the beginning of March through early- to mid-May. There will be no program during Spring Break.

Volunteer - An Hour a Week Could Change a K-5 Student's Life
More than 80% of East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park students are performing below grade level in reading and math. As a classroom volunteer, you will work with the same teacher and student every week for an hour during the school year. Community Service for Girls The new Sand Hill National Charity League chapter provides mothers and daughters a variety of organized activities that support local charities. National Charity League is dedicated to developing leadership for girls through hands-on volunteering to become confident, socially-aware, and well-rounded adults. Alpine Strikers Spring Soccer FC is the local soccer club and teams are coached by professional coaches and still has room in many age groups.
