--------- Thanks to those who were able to find some palms in your home and brought them to St. Mary’s with you this weekend.
----- ----The Ash Wednesday schedule for February 17th at St. Mary’s is as follows: Mass will be offered on Ash Wednesday at 7:30 AM and 7:00 PM. A prayer service will be offered on Ash Wednesday at 12:00 noon and 4:00 PM. The prayer service will include a Liturgy of the Word with distribution of ashes. To register and reserve your place, please use Sign-up Genius through the St. Mary’s website or by calling the Parish Office at (847) 234-0205.
---------Lent is a beautiful time of the year to simplify our lives, to enter deeper in prayer and grow with grace in our relationship with God and one another. May your Lenten hopes, intentions and desires come to fruition these days with the help of the Holy Spirit.
---------I am highlighting two opportunities for almsgiving that we are focusing on this year at St. Mary’s. First is a pre-Lenten opportunity to offer support to the Lake County PADS program and the second opportunity during Lent is to offer your active participation in learning about the work and ministry of Catholic Relief Services supported by the Rice Bowl initiative.
---------The pandemic has caused increased hardship on those living on the margins of life. PADS ministry offers help and support to those trying to improve their lives, overcoming economic and life challenges. You can support PADS with your prayer as well as with your resources….This week and next, we will be receiving donations of gift cards for groceries, gas and personal products. If you are able please purchase gift cards in denominations of $10 from grocery stores such as Jewel or Aldi, pharmacies such as Walgreens or CVS and general stores such as Target, Walmart or Meijer would be very much appreciated. Gift cards can be placed in an envelope and brought to Mass, placed in the offertory or dropped off at the Parish Office in the drop lock box.
---------St. Mary’s parishioners have supported PADS for many years. On average 50 guests are fed each month, with the dinners provided by members of our parish. Due to the pandemic, PADS is not bringing the men together for communal dining or to overnight sites for sleeping. Instead PADS has been housing them in motel rooms. At last count there were 200 guests being housed in such rooms by PADS. PADS also requests gift cards for grocery stores and fast food places so that the PADS staff are able to offer support to the men served by the PADS program. Thanks for your consideration, prayers and support of this outreach in the days leading up to the season of Lent.
---------As a parish, we are being invited to consider CRS Rice Bowl for our Lenten almsgiving. The following spiritual invitations are printed on the beautiful Rice Bowl bank that you can assemble in the envelope available to you as you leave the church today. The theme they are promoting this year is: For LENT For LIFE.
---------PRAY – God of mercy, you call us to recognize you in our sisters and brothers and to care for those most in need- for whatever you do to the least of these you do for me. This Lent, ignite your love in us so that through our prayer, fasting and almsgiving we may support all who experience hunger in body, heart and spirit. AMEN.
---------LEARN - meet your global family. Discover stories and more at crsricebowl.org.
---------FAST – MY Lenten fast in 2021 will be.
---------GIVE - $40 – will help purchase infant scales to measure babies’ growth
------------------ $80 – will help purchase chickens to provide eggs for protein and income
----------------- $120 – will help contribute to a household garden for family nutrition
---------Also included in the packet is a calendar with reminders and invitations for learning more about the difference your support will make, a weekly intention, a way to care for the earth, learn about Catholic social teaching, ways to fast and beautiful works of mercy. May your use of the CRS Rice Bowl information make this a rich and prayerful Lent for you and your family. Yes, you may take an extra packet or two to share with a co-worker, neighbor or family member. Please call the Parish Office if you would like a RiceBowl packet mailed to you.
--This year, with the guidelines in place for our wellbeing and our love of God and love of neighbor we are offering a modified experience of “Soup and Stations” on Fridays of Lent.
--------This year if you would like, you can purchase homemade soup loving made by the local “Soup Fairy” aka from Lia Landis soup specialist and longtime parishioner. A 1/2 Gallon of soup (in 2 separate quart containers) is available for $20.00. The soup is delivered to people in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Each week there will be a different soup offered for purchase. The current schedule is as follows: Friday, February 19, 2021 - Roasted Tomato, Friday, February 26, 2021 - Tuscan Bean and Kale, Friday, March 5, 2021 - Minestrone w/ Cheese Stuffed Tortellini and on Friday, March 12, 2021 - Tuscan Bean and Kale. You could order enough for you and your family – maybe even share some with social distancing with a neighbor. You could enjoy the simple dinner during Lent and then stream our praying of the stations and or join us at St. Mary’s at 7:00 PM on Friday evenings.
The deadline to order soup for the following Friday is by Tuesday at 12:00 Noon of that week. Once you place an order through my Administrative Assistant at the Parish Office (lardell@churchofstmary.org), you will receive a confirmation email with details regarding payment.
We may not be able to come together in the school cafeteria this year at the hospitality of the Knights of Columbus but we can enjoy a simple meal of soup united in “spirit” with one another on Fridays of Lent. You are invited to attend at 7:00 PM or stream the Stations of the Cross through the Church of St. Mary website.
During Lent we will be using a new Penitential Rite at all of the Masses. For those of you not familiar with the responses I am sharing it with you in this week’s article. It is very easy to remember.
Penitential Rite – Church of St. Mary – Lent 2021
Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord.
People: For we have sinned against you.
Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy.
People: And grant us your salvation.
Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
People: Amen.
Let’s pray for one another. Let’s pray for ourselves. Let’s pray for our Church. Let’s pray for our world. May God’s grace be active and ever present in our spiritual journey during the 40 days of Lent.
God bless you with hearts open to God’s grace and peace.

Please Make Your Gift
to the 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal
Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world
Our parish is conducting our campaign for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.
The Annual Catholic Appeal theme, “Come, follow me … and bring hope to the world,” was selected because as disciples of Jesus, we follow the Master who both gives us hope and sends us to bring His hope to our world that needs it so much.
Each pledge makes a difference! All parishes communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools and ministries to deliver needed services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

February 14, 2021: Gospel Reflection for Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
|
|
Sunday’s gospel is better understood when read in light of what we learn in the first reading from Leviticus. In our first reading, the book of Leviticus tells us what to do should a person contract leprosy. It is important to remember that this was thousands of years ago and science was barely in its infancy, especially compared to medicine and the sciences now. If you do not know if a person has psoriasis which is not contagious versus leprosy which can be contagious, you would sequester both to be safe and keep anything that is contagious from ravaging the whole community. These days of COVID19 that sounds all too familiar! However in Old Testament times, you wouldn’t just stay in your home if you were thought to be sick. No, you had to leave the community, live outside its borders and should anyone come anywhere near you, you had to shout “Unclean, unclean”. Being considered unclean meant you were physically and spiritually ostracized by the community.
There is the added dimension of how society in Old Testament times (& still today) viewed abundance. In scripture abundance is a sign of God’s love. We hear of sumptuous feasts with choice wines, all a sign of how much God loves humanity. Society took that to a new level. If you had a lot of money, material objects, children, good health, property, and livestock; that was a sign of God blessing you. The converse was also thought to be true. If you had no money, were sick, no property, no children; that was seen as a sign that you or your forefathers have done something to upset God. Therefore you deserved to be poor, sick, childless and so on. Our first reading sets the stage and reminds us of that prevailing notion in order to show how radical Jesus’ words and actions truly are!
In Sunday’s gospel a leper, someone who has been cast outside the community physically, emotionally and spiritually, approaches Jesus. This person has heard about Jesus and how he has healed others. More so, the leper senses that Jesus is different from other healers; that Jesus’ desire is to heal all those who are suffering, who are disenfranchised, who feel distant from God’s love. Jesus breaks social and religious norms again and again to show what God’s love really looks like when lived out.
The leper has a simple request, to be made clean. Jesus has compassion for the leper and touches the man and the leprosy is instantly gone. Just like Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, once touched by Jesus they were both healed, they were both radically changed and immediately went about doing God’s will. By touching the man technically Jesus would be seen as “unclean” yet that is not important to Jesus. What is important is bringing people back into community, back into relationship with God.
Jesus tells the man to not say a word of the healing but to go to the temple priest to show that he is now clean and may rejoin the community. We don’t know if the man went to the temple priest or not but we do know that he does not keep quiet about Jesus healing him. He becomes an evangelist and lets everyone know of the good deeds Jesus has done. Ironically now that the man is healed and considered clean, his widespread praise of Jesus forces Jesus out of the community. Jesus doesn’t want fame or notoriety so he must leave the community yet people keep seeking him out. There is something about Jesus that calls to people. He not only heals on a physical level but more importantly on a spiritual level as well. People want to learn more of what Jesus is about. How he speaks to people, how he lives his life is inspiring people to want to be better, to do better, to be people of God. As we approach Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent, may we take inventory of what is really important in life and do away with anything that does not bring us closer to God.

“Brothers and sisters, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.” CORINTHIANS 10:31
Do a quick check of your priorities. Where does God rank in that list? If He’s not first, you have some work to do. Putting God first in everything helps us from putting other “gods” (like our pride and ego, money and possessions to name a few) before God. Before making a decision, ask yourself, am I doing this for the glory of God or for the glory of me?
