FAITH that Works
“13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
5 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. 4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.” James 4:13 – 5:6 ESV
To avoid adopting an attitude of arrogance in our planning, we need to get 2 things right: (4:13-17)
1. Our view of the _______________ (4:13-14a)
2. Our view of __________________ (4:14b-17)
Learn from the mistakes of rich people (5:1-6)
- Game Plan This Week:
- Review the sermon
o What were the main points?
o What points were most meaningful to you?
- Study/discuss the text
o From James 4:13-14, what evidence should be seen in our schedule of our faith in God?
o How could someone look at our calendar or schedule and determine that we are an atheist? Explain your reasoning.
- Break into smaller groups and discuss these items:
o “If the Lord wills.” Why is it important that this not just be something we say -vs- an attitude of our heart?
o Proverbs 16:9 à How does our planning intersect with the Lord’s establishing our steps? Where does this verse apply?
o Sin of commission -vs- sin of omission? Which is more prevalent among Christians? Explain.
- This week make a commitment to sit down often with God and discuss how you can live out this passage.
o Contemplate on this question: Where is God wanting me to serve? Step in and love?
o How does this passage change your prayer life?
o Continue to build on the daily habit of prayer this week.
o Ask God who are the three people that are not followers of Jesus that you need to begin praying for.
