Dear Carondelet Community,
On Wednesday, February 18, our community will gather for the Ash Wednesday liturgy to receive ashes as a shared sign of our mortality and need for God’s mercy. This tradition marks the beginning of Lent, a season dedicated to deeper prayer, sacrifice, and increased giving. Spiritual Life Council will launch this year’s Lenten Justice Project, “All Superheroes Need Underwear," at the liturgy and invite our community to support Days for Girls International—an organization that increases access to menstrual care and education. As an all-girls school, we are uniquely positioned to bring issues that impact the wellness of girls and women around the globe into the light. We are excited to encourage thoughtful, open conversation about menstruation, reducing the stigma that exists around discussing this very normal part of life.
Every month, two billion people around the world menstruate. While menstruation is a normal process, many women and girls are adversely impacted by it because they either cannot afford menstrual products or do not have access to proper sanitation to manage their periods. This results in health issues, lack of freedom, and missed school days—all factors that perpetuate the cycle of poverty. One of the most effective ways to defeat poverty is to equip people with an education. Girls cannot fight or overcome poverty if they are not in school. Days for Girls works to provide menstrual kits containing underwear and washable pads so that no girl has to miss a day of school during her period. At Carondelet, we are going to contribute to these kits by donating packs of cotton underwear. Donations will be collected in the Inner Court from February 19 to March 20. Our goal is to collect 600 packs of girls’ and women’s underwear. Help us equip girls with the “gear” they need to take on the world. When a girl has the right “gear,” she is empowered to be the hero of her own story. All superheroes need underwear, and every girl deserves to reach her full potential. Period.
Donation Details:
We invite all families to contribute by donating new packs of 100% cotton or cotton-blend underwear in sizes 12–16 (girls) or 5–7 (women). We can accept brand new, unopened packages of plain classic briefs, high cut briefs, full briefs, hipster, or bikini with no images (in order to be culturally sensitive, we will avoid images of animals, eyes, “girly glam,” words, food, etc.) You can purchase packs of underwear via our Amazon Wishlist and bring them to the Inner Court!
Here’s to a Lenten season full of learning, advocacy, service, deepened prayer, and solidarity with those in need. May your journey toward the Easter season bring you closer to God and all of God’s people.
In Unifying Love,
The Campus Ministry Staff
