Singing the Spirituals; Black History According to our UU Hymnals
In this worship service, Amanda M. Thomas will help to explore how Spirituals became a part of American History. This will be an interactive service, as we sing Spirituals from our UU hymnals. Amanda currently serves as Interim Choir Director at Dupage Unitarian Universalist Church in Naperville, Illinois. As an active UU for 23 years, Amanda has served on the Board of Trustees for the Association of UU Music Ministries, on the UUA’s Music Leadership Certification Committee, and currently serves on the UUA’s Appointments Committee. Amanda is very active in the wider UU world and has been choir director, songleader, workshop leader, and choir member at our annual UU General Assembly.
Children & youth will remain in this special service.

Greetings from Kathy Underwood
Valentine (Re)Engagement
With Valentine’s Day this week, I have been giving some thought to love and the many types of love there are. The obvious one is romantic love, and yet there are many others, such as friendship and platonic love, love for a hobby or sport, love for a pet. My attention, however, has been more along the lines of love for community. We are all part of many communities, such as our neighborhoods, families, circle of friends, clubs, and of course, UCE

Since we re-opened our doors after the height of the pandemic, we have been striving towards reconnecting with each other and exploring new ways of doing so. We continue working towards Beloved Community. Like life and love, it has had its challenges and successes.

Our hats are off to the FAST Team - our Empty Bowls Fundraiser last Sunday was a huge success!
We raised over $1600 which will be divided equally between Hillside Pantry, the Producemobile, and Connections for the Homeless.
Thank you to the many talented artisans who donated their work, and the volunteers who brought delicious food, helped in the kitchen, set-up, served and cleared up. Thank you to our congregation and guests for buying artwork and lunches, and to Rev. Susan and UCE staff who assisted from the get-go. We greatly appreciate everyone’s time, effort, and generosity. Plus, a giant shout out to Maggie Weiss for creating such enthusiasm to bring in beautiful artistic donations and volunteers, and for remembering to call the Bread Guy!

UCE Non-Fiction Book Group
South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation by Imani Perry.
Winner of the 2022 National Book Award for Nonfiction. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole. This is the story of a Black woman and native Alabaman returning to the region she has always called home and considering it with fresh eyes. As she travels around the South, the author weaves together stories of immigrant communities, contemporary artists, exploitative opportunists, enslaved peoples, unsung heroes, her own ancestors and her lived experiences. South to America offers an assertion that if we want to build a more humane future for the United States, we must center our concern below the Mason-Dixon Line.
