A Note from Sherri:

For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.                                                                               Romans 12:4-5

I’ve been thinking about the United Methodist Connection and how we are connected to one another, as individuals and congregations, with United Methodists around the world. We seem to have lost sight of our connection to one another, or if we acknowledge it at all, see it as a detriment rather than a blessing. That’s unfortunate, because together, we can do more than any one person or church could do on their own.

Part of my thinking about connection is how we respond to the task of providing statistical information to the general church. More than one pastor has told me, “I want to do real ministry, not complete reports.” While completing reports is not exciting work, it is real ministry. For instance, those numbers help decide how the general church will set jurisdictional boundaries and influences the number of bishops who will serve. Those numbers are used to determine your local congregation’s shared ministries, and the shared ministries of the conference – yes! The conference pays shared ministries to the jurisdiction and the general church! Those shared ministries are used in a variety of ways including funding global mission, leadership development and crisis response. Those numbers are an indicator of the health and vitality of your congregation. Just like your temperature and blood pressure give an indication of your physical health, the statistical information you provide gives a snapshot of the health of the congregation. Does it tell the whole picture? No. But it does provide some important indicators of vitality.

To date, 362 of our churches have not submitted their statistical data – and the deadline was last week. That’s more than half of the churches in our conference. Friends, we are connected to one another. We rely on one another, working together to be the church in a world that needs us now more than ever. When we don’t follow through with the work that is before us, we all suffer. It makes it more difficult for the conference staff to do their work, and for the general church to make good decisions on our behalf that will benefit us all. As United Methodists, I pray we will bless one another by leaning into our covenant relationship and by taking seriously the shared work that is before us.

Grace and peace,

Sherri
