City of Malibu Awards General Fund Grants to Support Education and Community Wildfire Preparedness | | |
The City of Malibu continues its annual investment in programs that directly benefit the community through its General Fund Grant Program. For Fiscal Year 2025-26, the Malibu City Council approved $415,000 to support two key nonprofit partners: $315,000 to the Malibu Education Foundation and $100,000 to the Community Brigade, recognizing their critical roles in local education and emergency preparedness.
The Malibu Education Foundation will use its grant to continue enhancing public education through instructional support, academic intervention, arts, and athletic programs that benefit students across Malibu schools. Meanwhile, the Community Brigade will expand its disaster preparedness efforts, training volunteers in wildfire readiness, home hardening, and neighborhood coordination to help residents better prepare for emergencies.
| | | Governor Newsom Expands Mortgage Relief Program For One Year to LA Fire Survivors | | |
Governor Gavin Newsom has expanded the state’s CalAssist Mortgage Fund, increasing support for disaster-affected homeowners. Eligible homeowners can now receive up to 12 months of mortgage assistance, up from the previous three-month limit, with a maximum of $100,000 in total relief.
As part of ongoing recovery efforts, the expanded program supports homeowners impacted by the 2025 LA fires and other qualifying disasters. Those who previously received three months of assistance may be eligible for additional aid, bringing total support to a full year.
Eligibility has also expanded. In LA County, households earning up to $281,400 annually now qualify, a $70,000 increase from the prior income limit.

The City of Malibu has completed an independent After-Action Review (AAR) examining how emergency operations were managed during the 2024 Franklin Fire and the 2025 Palisades Fire. The City’s AAR will be presented to Council at the City Council Meeting on March 9 and the Public Safety Commission Meeting on April 1.
The report focuses on the City’s emergency management and Emergency Operations Center processes, including coordination, communication, evacuation, and operations during the emergencies. The AAR is an independent report prepared by Witt O’Brien’s, a nationally recognized emergency management and disaster response firm. It was commissioned to uphold the City’s commitment to transparency and accountability while applying lessons learned from past disasters to strengthen planning and enhance future emergency response.
Community members are encouraged to review the AAR, attend the City Council meeting to learn more, provide public comment, and ask questions. The meeting will also be livestreamed on YouTube for those unable to attend in person.

LA County Misfortune and Calamity Tax Relief
Property owners whose homes or businesses were damaged or destroyed by a disaster, such as fire or flooding, may be eligible for property tax relief.
To qualify, the loss must exceed $10,000 in current market value, and property owners must file an Application for Reassessment: Property Damaged or Destroyed by Misfortune or Calamity (M&C), Form ADS-820, with the Assessor’s Office within 12 months of the date the damage occurred.
Filing this claim may allow your property to be reassessed to reflect its reduced value, potentially lowering your property tax obligation during the recovery period.

| | Rebuild Progress Continues with February Meetings and March Updates Ahead | | |
On February 4, Community Development Director Yolanda Bundy and Assistant Director Tyler Eaton met with Rebuild Zone Captains to hear neighborhood updates and provide the latest information on rebuild progress. Staff shared updates on projects currently under review at the Rebuild Center, discussed Southern California Edison’s powerline undergrounding timeline, highlighted upcoming recovery milestones and responded to questions about the rebuild process.
On February 11, the City hosted a Fire Rebuilds Design Professionals Meeting at City Hall, providing architects, designers and industry professionals with updates on permitting activity, coordination efforts and the City’s ongoing recovery initiatives.
Community engagement will continue in March with several upcoming meetings. On March 11, the City will hold a Fire Rebuilds Design Professionals Meeting at City Hall at 12:00 PM, as well as an Evacuation Plan Community Workshop in the Multi-Purpose Room at 6:00 PM. Lastly, on March 21, a Community Meeting with Rebuild Families will take place at City Hall at 3:00 PM.
