Vice Mayor Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin

This Black History Month, the Broward MPO proudly shines a spotlight on an influential figure within our community, Vice Mayor Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin, a dedicated public servant whose contributions to Broward County have transformed the region. Born and raised in Broward County, Vice Mayor Martin’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of community. A first-generation Bahamian, Vice Mayor Martin was raised in a single-parent household where hard work and perseverance were ingrained in him from an early age. His journey, marked by the sacrifices of his hardworking mother and the guidance of a praying grandmother, epitomizes the essence of Black excellence. He is a proud product of the Broward County Public School System, showcasing the caliber of success achievable through dedication and educational pursuit. He graduated from Plantation High School in 1981, earning his degree from the University of Florida in 1985. These formative experiences set the foundation for a lifelong commitment to public service. His active engagement as a certified volunteer with both the Broward County School Board and the Boys and Girls Club, as well as his involvement with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., underscores his dedication to making a meaningful difference.  Whether as a coach with the Lauderhill Lions Football Program or through his many other volunteer endeavors, Martin’s efforts exemplify a lifetime of leadership and service. As we celebrate Black History Month, we honor Vice Mayor Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin, whose life and work reflect the values of service, leadership, and community empowerment. His story is not just a part of Black history but a vital chapter in the ongoing story of Broward County's resilience, diversity, and spirit of communal uplift. Thank you, Vice Mayor Martin, for your dedication and service to our community!

We’ve Been Working on the Railroad

Last year, the Broward MPO, joined by Broward County, Brightline, and five local municipalities were awarded over $15 million in Federal funding to enhance rail safety along the corridor. The nearly $20 million project will increase safety at 21 at-grade crossings. At the end of January, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) joined the team to review the chosen eastern rail corridor crossings. Over the two-day visit, assessments and suggestions were addressed for the project to maximize the safety and effectiveness of the crossings. These improvements will prevent vehicles from going around the gates when a train is approaching. The team is excited about the continued progress on this project, as it will bring us closer to the goal of Vision Zero, to ensure there are zero fatalities in Broward County. Together, we are working at all levels to make Broward County safe for everyone.
