From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor
-------Last Saturday, parish leadership from Holy Cross in Deerfield, St. Patrick’s, and St. Mary’s came together for a day of reflection, sharing, and conversation led by Eleanor Seagraves of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Eleanor is the Parish Vitality Coordinator for Vicariate 1. The conversations were centered around how our respective parishes can be more effective in “bringing others to Jesus” in our parishes and communities. This was the first of two gatherings; our next meeting will be March 4 as we continue to pray and reflect on how we are called to share our faith in our world.

-------I share the following prayer with you today, from the Prayer for the New Evangelization from the USCCB website, usccb.org.

Heavenly Father, pour forth Your Holy Spirit to inspire me
with these words from Holy Scripture.

Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith
and deepen my relationship with Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ
so that I might truly believe in and live the Good News.

Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim
 the Good News to others.

Pour out Your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth
and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and actions.

In moments of hesitation, remind me:

If not me, then who will proclaim the Gospel?
If not now, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed?
If not the truth of the Gospel, then what shall I proclaim?
God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit
I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith,
grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel
and boldly witness to the saving grace of Your Son, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

-------Thank you to everyone who has made or will be making a pledge to the Archdiocese of Chicago, “Walking on the Road with Jesus,” Annual Catholic Appeal. Annual Appeal pledge envelopes can be placed in the offertory collection basket this weekend, mailed to the parish, or donations may be made electronically to the Appeal. I am hoping that we can exceed the number of parishioners that supported the appeal last year with generosity shown towards this year’s appeal by individuals and families of St. Mary’s.

-------We begin the holy and prayerful season of Lent this coming Wednesday, February 22. Please look for the schedule of Masses listed in today’s bulletin.

-------I am excited to share that during Lent the Church of St. Mary will be participating, along with all the other parishes in the Archdiocese, in a survey conducted by the Catholic Leadership Institute. The survey allows parishioners to reflect on their own spiritual growth and discipleship, and also identify ways in which the parish can support that growth. The survey will be accessible online and in paper form (available in the church and the Parish Office) from Ash Wednesday, February 22 to March 31. All responses will be anonymous and the parish will only receive a summary of all responses in total -- no individual responses will be reported. It only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, so please take a bit of time to do the survey. Results will greatly support the plans of the Archdiocese for the future. Beginning this coming Wednesday, you can follow this link - portal.catholicleaders.org/dmi/survey/g56ykg to complete the survey.

-------Next Sunday, February 26, we welcome Mr. Greg Kozak back to St. Mary’s. Greg shared a prayerful reflection on living the Eucharist ‘the other 167 hours of the week’ during the days of the Advent season. Join us in the church at 3:00pm on Sunday or Monday evening, February 27 at 7:00pm. You can attend and bring a friend to the Lenten Adult Enrichment presentation to help us reflect on “The Other 167: How Mass Impacts the Rest of my Week in Lent.” This is the second of three presentations that Greg will offer the parishioners and friends of St. Mary’s. He will conclude his series with a presentation in the Easter season. Also, please note that in Lent you have the opportunity to attend the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday evenings at St. Mary’s.

-------May we turn to God who strengthens us in living with Christ in 2023,-----
Join Fellow St. Mary's Parishioners on March 7

What is 40 Days for Life? It is a nationwide campaign to save lives and convert those in the abortion industry to the cause of life. This campaign runs from February 22, Ash Wednesday, to April 2, Palm Sunday. Each day during the campaign volunteers in our area will be praying across from the Planned Parenthood facility at 1601 N. Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.

What can we do? Pray and witness in order to save lives. Former abortion workers report that when somebody is praying in front of an abortion facility, the no-show rate for abortion appointments can reach 75%. It is a peaceful and prayerful protest. You can volunteer any time during the 40-day period, but parishioners of St. Mary’s are planning to pray together on Tuesday, March 7 from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Please sign up for an hour to join us. Note that another group is also saying the rosary in Latin every Wednesday at 11:00am, and that young adults are meeting to pray at 2:00pm on Saturdays.

How? There is a sign-up available at www.40daysforlife.com/en/waukegan
You can also contact Deacon Jack Herrmann (jherrmann@churchofstmary.org) specifying the hour(s) for which you want to volunteer.

Where can I get more information about 40 Days for Life? Their website can be found at www.40daysforlife.com/en/waukegan. Another source of information is the vigil coordinator Leslie (hazfam6@comcast.net or call/text: (84) 951.1064.)

STEWARDSHIP
“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…” MATTHEW 5:44
Love your enemies, easier said than done, no doubt. But, remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from “me” and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for “our enemy”. When we pray for others, even “our enemies”, maybe it softens their hearts as well.
