Scouting for Food
Scouting for Food is the largest community service food drive in our area involving Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturers and Explorers.
Your unit should participate in the Council's Scouting for Food community service project and let your local area know about this service project to help your local community food banks. Let's all work together and make this year’s effort even more successful than last year’s and collect more than 85,000 pounds of food across the Northern Lights Council!
How do current health safety concerns affect Scouting for Food?
We need to keep our community and Scouts safe. If the plan for the Scouting for Food campaign is followed, minimal risk is involved:
-
Use Door Hangers - from March 13-19, Scouts to go door to door in assigned areas to deliver door hangers that have instructions for how people can donate. There is no contact or interaction between the resident and the Scout.
- The door hanger has instructions stating - “Please place food items in your own paper or plastic bag and place food outside of your front door this coming Saturday morning by 9:00 am for the Scouts to pick-up. If we miss you, please bring the food items to your local food pantry or Gate City Bank by March 31.”
-
Scouts return on March 20 to pick up food items that have been left by the door. They should not knock on doors or go inside to collect food - therefore no contact is made with the resident.
Door Hangers
Many units still have door hangers left over from 2020 because we had to suspend the campaign due to the pandemic. To help us determine how many we need to get printed for 2021, by February 25 please complete this survey if you are planning to participate this year.
Help us gather results and get patches to your unit:
-
By March 29, record your Scouting for Food results here.
- Scouting for Food Patches will be distributed once the council has received your report.
- Have fun! Take pictures. The Scouting for Food community service project is the perfect opportunity to let your community know about your unit. Leave a unit flyer or thank you note with the door hangers, take pictures and submit them to your local newspapers.
Thank you for your unit’s participation in this very important community service project. If you have questions contact your local District Scouting for Food coordinator or District Executive.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)
NYLT is designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others. Planning is now in the going on for the 2021 course.
Larry Martin (Bismarck) has agreed to serve as the Course Director & Scoutmaster, with Doug Hansen (Fergus Falls) serving as Asst. Course Director & ASM.
The course will be held on two weekends – July 30 through August 1 and August 6 through 8. We hope that by offering it on weekends that Scouts with summer jobs might still be able to participate.
To make sure everyone can follow protocols for COVID mitigation, the course will be limited to 15 youth participants. There will be 3 patrols of 5 Scouts each.
To be more centrally located, we are going to conduct the course at the Wanzek Center for Scouting in Fargo. Scouts will camp on the grounds and use the meeting facilities including the Tower room. We will arrange with the YMCA for using shower facilities.

Schedule a Family FOS Presentation
During the first few months of each year (usually Jan/Feb/Mar), we ask packs and troops to allow a Family Friends of Scouting presentation to be scheduled during the Blue and Gold Banquet, Court of Honor or other pack/troop meeting. The district will have a presenter attend and talk to the parents for about 8-10 minutes about how the council supports the local pack. Parents are then given the opportunity to make a financial pledge to the Friends of Scouting campaign. This is not a high-pressure sales pitch.

Leave a Lasting Impression at Camp Wilderness
The Camp Wilderness courtyard serves as a welcome area and is the center of activity.
Located on the south side of the Herman Stern Dining Hall, the courtyard includes a log shelter. The shelter was built using Norway pines that were cut on the camp property.
One of the distinctive features of the courtyard is the personalized paving bricks placed throughout the courtyard. Five sizes of bricks denote giving levels. The Scout and First Class levels are made with paving bricks. The Star, Life and Eagle levels are made using granite.
By ordering one or more bricks for yourself, a family member, Troop or in recognition of a Scout leader, or Eagle Scout, you will be leaving a permanent imprint on Camp Wilderness.
Proceeds from the brick campaign will be used to improve Camp Wilderness. The funds will be used for projects such as replacing dining hall tables, purchasing new program equipment, program area improvements and other future projects.
