This year The Board has decided to donate $1,000 to the Art Department of independence High School. Independence High is a small high school located in Diamond Springs. It is a unique high school geared to those students who may be at risk of not graduating.
Jen Tomei, the art teacher, was absolutely thrilled when I spoke with her about receiving this donation. She thought this money would best go for the purchase of a camera, glass beads and/or tools. She could not thank us enough for our generous gift. Ms. Tomoei will be attending our February 19th meeting when we will present her with our check.
PAA wishes to thank all of you who have donated so generously to our Community Outreach Program. Please know that we DO make a difference!

feb17marchallMarch Challenge

We will have another Challenge for our March meeting. The theme is "Spring!"  So get out your pencils, paints, clay, or whatever else you like to use and let Spring be your inspiration.  We look forward to seeing your work!

feb17springshowSpring Show News

Our deep appreciation goes to Julia Swain, our Member Show Chairman, who has been working hard to find a venue for our Spring Member show in the face of being unable to use the Government Center due to construction.

She's gone above and beyond and is in the process of securing the Harris Center B of A Gallery for us for May 19th to July 9th.  This is a great venue, and the Board is in the process of finalizing the details.  So watch for more news, and get painting.  Or sculpting!  For this member show we'll be able to display 3D work!

feb17membMembership Renewal Reminder

For those of you who haven't yet sent in your membership renewal for 2017, please do so.  We rely on your dues to pay our basic but necessary expenses such as insurance, rental for the Senior Center for our meetings, payment for our demonstrators, and so on.  We need you!  And at the same time, we need your ideas.  If you have any suggestions for PAA, please get them to one of the board members.

Every two years, St. John's Lutheran Church sponsors an art festival featuring works from artists throughout the northern California region and emphasizing spiritual and religious themes.

This year the theme is "Let The Spirit Sing!" and the art will be juried by noted Sacramento artist, Jerry Silva.  The show begins with a champagne reception, open to the public, on March 9 and will continue through March 19, 2017.

They accept work from all media and encourage participation from beginning artists, as well as well-seasoned ones.  Submissions will be accepted March 4 and 5.  For all the details, visit  stjohnslc.org/artfestival

And then, there's the Richeson Floral and Still Life competition.  This is an on-line show sponsored by the Richeson company.  Remember that our very own Shirley Isola won best in show in there recent Animals and Wildlife competition.  The deadline for the current Floral and Still Life competitiion is March 1.  For more details, visit their website at  Richeson Competitions

I've been doing some spring cleaning in the space I call a studio. I find organizing this space makes room for the creation of more art and also helps clear my mind for new projects. After patting myself on the back for my creativity in finding unique places to tuck art supplies, I realized I can't remember where I put things. Oh well, this is a work in progress.

PAA has some exciting changes coming. We will be revealing a redesign to the PAA website later this spring. Many thanks to Vesla Greenwood, whose talent and hard work are making this possible. Just remember, when things are moved, it can take a little getting used to.

We also will see exciting changes to the 2017 Spring Membership Show. The Government Center is not available this spring as it is undergoing a major remodel. Our proactive Show Chairperson, Julia Swain, has found an alternative location at the Harris Center in Folsom. It is a little ways to travel, but I think this is an exciting new venue for this year's show. We will have more details in the coming weeks.

We are inviting everyone who has done plein air to bring a piece (or two) to our General Meeting on February 19th. And if you have any stories about the benefits and challenges of working outdoors, we would love to hear them!

Now where did I put those paint brushes?
