Kung Hee Fat Choy! As we say in Chinese to welcome the New Year. This year, on February 5th, it is the Year of the Boar. If you were born in 1923,1935, 1947, 1959, or every 12 years after, this is your year!

(and crew) for arranging to have the January meeting at the fabulous newly-renovated Elks Club. There were 40+ member volunteers who enjoyed the fantastic view, delicious food and fellowship to start off the new year with this very important meeting.

Our next Regular Meeting on February 13 at Kirin Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency is a speaker meeting featuring one of our own Community Advisors,
Leslie Wilcox
. She is currently the President and CEO of PBS Hawaii. It will be great to see her again and hear her speak about her experiences in her life and career. This is a meeting you will not want to miss!
According to the Chinese astrology, 2019 is a great year to make money, and a good year to invest! 2019 is going to be full of joy, a year of friendship and love for all the zodiac signs; an auspicious year because the boar attracts success in all the spheres of life. I believe Assistance League of Hawaii will have a great, successful, and prosperous year with lots of accomplishments of which we can all be proud.

The February 13 Assistance League Hawaii Regular Meeting will be held at the
Kirin Restaurant
located in the
Hyatt Regency Beach Resort and Spa on 2424 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu 96825
. Meeting will begin at 10:30 am with luncheon to follow. The Kirin restaurant is in the hotel basement. There is no elevator though there is a chair-lift which is currently in operation.
The cost for the buffet lunch is $17.00 per person. Parking is available in the Hyatt Regency Beach Resort and Spa and will cost: $3.00 for self-parking and $4.00 for
valet parking for 4 hours. Please note the directions to the hotel and hotel parking below. The valet desk can direct you to the restaurant. Allow time for parking.

, President and CEO, PBS Hawaii, will be our guest speaker. Ms. Wilcox has been a longtime print and broadcast journalist who is well-known for her PBS TV show "
Long Story Short
". In addition to a long list of awards and volunteer and advisory roles and responsibilities, she serves as a member of our Assistance League Hawaii's Community Advisory Council. The subject for her talk is:
"The Strength in Letting Go"
which reflects her own experience and sentiments that frequently come up in conversations she has with people at different life stages around the state. We are looking forward to welcoming Leslie and listening to her insights regarding this timely subject.

To get there, please take Kalakaua Avenue to Kaiulani Avenue and take a left. Take a right on Koa Avenue and another right on Uluniu Avenue. Turn right to find valet on the right side of Uluniu Avenue. The self-parking garage is across the street, on the left side of Uluniu Avenue.

Starting February 1 our Thrift Shop will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays
from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Three-Day Schedule Starts on February 1
Assistance League of Hawaii Thrift Shop will be closed on Fridays starting February 1 through the end of April. Hopefully our staffing situation downstairs will improve. There will be one full day of being closed before each day we are open. This will provide more time to get items down to the salesfloor. I'm sure we will adjust to this as we have done with major changes before.
People may be confused for a time, but remember, we have been closed on
Mondays and Wednesdays for years, and yet we still get people coming on those days. It may be wise for the first weeks to keep the chain closed on Young Street on Fridays. If you should come to work that day, and the chain is up, just use the Kaheka Street entrance.
The Property Management Team and the Thrift Shop Steering Committee have been busy working on the necessary upgrades for the shop such as the surveillance system, electrical wiring and security. The display window situation was successfully taken care of, and now we have a larger display area for merchandise. We will keep you posted as changes are made.
Thank you for allowing us to make needed changes. I hope you will find time to come and work, either downstairs or upstairs.

The hands-on display with our biofacts is always a popular attraction.

Operation Wildlife (OWL) ladies have been busy. We took three trips to Hilo last month.

l presented at these elementary schools: Kahala, Na'alehu, Kea'au and Keonepoko. The following week

joined Andrea and Ronnie to present the program to the following elementary schools: St. Joseph, Kalaniana'ole, E.B de Silva, Haili Christian, Waiakea, Hilo Union, Ha'aheo, Waiakaiweana, Chiefess Kapiolani, Kaumana Elementary, and Lapahoehoe.
This month the Hana and Molokai trips will be done by Joy Corbett and Anne Ranaldo.
We appreciate our "snowbirds" and can't do any of this without them.
The students and teachers are very positive and enthusiastic about the program. One little girl's comment was ,"I'll never have a chance to touch animals like this again in my life".
There will be an Operation Wildlife Meeting on Monday, February 18 at 1:00pm in the Ohana Room. Please RSVP.

Assistance League Action Week Starts February 25
|
Assistance League Action Week
will be taking place February 25 to March 3.
This national effort is to raise awareness of the importance of childhood literacy and put books in the hands of children who might not have access to them. This year Assistance League of Hawaii will again participate by buying and donating books for the Kahauiki Village Preschool (2 - 5 year old classes). We will be collecting books or funds at the February meeting.
I hope you can help with this project by donating a book or some money.

|
The January 26 Operation School Bell In-Store Shopping event at Target in Kapolei was very successful. Thanks to our 22 members who participated. We served 151 elementary students from Ma'ili and Waipahu Elementary Schools with new school clothing of their choosing. There were big smiles all around.
Our next In-Store Shopping event will be on
Saturday, February 9
at Target store in Kapolei, and our last event of this school year will be on
Saturday, February 23

unpacked and packaged 850 Malama Bears. The Bears are ready to be delivered to local hospitals and hospices.

delivered kitchen utensils, towels and other household items to Hale Kipa for two clients transitioning from foster care.
There will be a Lullaby Layette packing party at
Jane Winslow's
home in Kailua on Friday, February 15 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. We will be packaging 250 layette sets to be delivered to local hospitals. Refreshments will be served. If you would like to help, call Jane at 285-5603.

Condolences to Vicki Fay & Her Family
Condolences to member volunteer
Vicki Fay on the loss of her husband, Bill.
Bill Fay passed away on January 16th, after a long battle with vascular parkinsonism. He was 89. He is also survived by his daughter Emily, son Ben and three grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, February 22nd at St. Johns By-the Sea Episcopal Church, 47-074 Lihikai Drive, Kahaluu, Kaneohe. Lunch will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made sent to Hawaii Symphony Orchestra or to the Episcopal Relief and Development.
