Dear Cienega Families,
Just recently, we successfully finished class schedule registration for the 2019/2020 school year. Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students selected their choices for next year's class schedule. If your student did not get a chance to register, please have them see his or her counselor as soon as possible.
Vail Pride Day is set for Saturday, February 16th at the Pima County Fair Grounds. Student work will be displayed, awards will be given out, and it is a great opportunity for the community to come together. We hope to see you this year at Vail Pride Day.
Lastly, please help us with our annual parent survey. The information we gather from the survey allows us to continue our improvement. Below is the website for the survey.
Your involvement in your child's education is an important part of keeping our Cienega community strong.
Sincerely,
|

This past Saturday, our Cienega Bobcats Special Olympics team competed in its firstever basketball competition! Our team won bronze and our two independent skills competitors won bronze and gold!
Huge shout out to Danika Leon and Madison Kroeger for being absolutely amazing unified partners, and being so encouraging to the athletes. Unified sports are possible because of your efforts and enthusiasm.
Thank you so much to everyone for their support. We are so proud of everything they have accomplished so far.

Testing Dates:
General Reminders:
- If your student is taking any courses through correspondence or Dual Enrollment through Pima, it is their responsibility to bring the transcript from that school to the registrar in order to get credit for the class and to be able to participate in graduation ceremonies. This deadline is MAY 1st unless taking a Pima class. That deadline will be two days after the class has been completed.
- If nine absences are accumulated in any class regardless of the reason, unless it is a school related activity, THE STUDENT WILL NOT PASS THE CLASS AND WILL NOT GRADUATE IF THE CLASS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION! Refer to the student agenda for exceptions to this policy.
- Seniors planning on attending a four-year college should have applied to their schools by now. You may lose valuable scholarship opportunities by procrastinating any longer.
- Be sure to check the CHS Website for updated scholarship opportunities. The link can be found by entering the website at http://chs.vail.k12.az.us click on the "Counselor" link, from there click on "Scholarships". This page is updated regularly, so check back often.
- Senioritis can sometimes creep up on students. Please be aware of this and monitor your student's attendance and grades carefully so that there will be no unhappy surprises in May when it is time to celebrate the graduation of your son or daughter from Cienega.
- Please utilize PowerSchool on a regular basis and stay informed of the progress your son or daughter is making in his or her classes (http://ps.vail.k12.az.us .)

SUPERB SCIENCE AT CIENEGA
|
Congratulations to Elijah Amico for winning first place in Cienega's science fair with his project "Politics in the Classroom". Elijah and twenty other Cienega students will be displaying their projects at Vail Pride Day and continuing on to compete at SARSEF (Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair). Science fair is just one of the many science opportunities that exist at Cienega. Opportunities including 6 AP classes, a new course offering in marine science and trips to places like the rain forest in Peru. Encourage your student ask a science teacher about what else they could be doing to pursue a future in science!

The Cats CARE Team
|
Data and graphs
Some of us are visual learners, so this installment of the Cats Care update is for you! PBIS is built on four elements; Supporting Social Competence and Academic Achievement, Supporting Decision Making, Supporting Student Behavior, and Supporting Staff Behavior. Using data, having systems of support, and practices adopted by the whole campus we try to make Cienega a safe and engaging environment.
When we have our systems, data, and practices in place we can look at the impact we're having. Our success is measured as we evaluate our PBIS triangle, a graph that represents how many referrals (the document that is generated when students require discipline from an administrator) each student has. The base of the triangle represents the percentage of student that have zero or one referral this year and is marked in green. The second tier of students are considered "at risk," based on their discipline referrals and is generally 10-15% of the student body. The tier three students are at high-risk of being long term suspended or worse. Below is a typical American's high school's triangle:
Thanks to the tireless efforts of our Cats Care team, staff, and an administration that is committed to the CAT statement, our triangle looks like this:
That tiny blip you see at the top of the triangle represents the less than 2% of our students considered at-risk or high-risk! When we say we have great students at Cienega, we have the data to back it up!

Finish next school year a with a trip to
Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world! Join us as we
explore Peru in the summer of 2020
. The Farrs, Ms. Crusa, Dr. Rathman, and Mr. Thomas will lead an adventure from the Andes to the Amazon - from mountain top temples to tropical rainforests.
Come experience the natural history of the Sacred Valley, travel by train through mountain peaks, tour Incan artifacts in Lima, Cusco, and Pisac and learn about the 400 types of potatoes Peruvians cultivate! Not to mention, we're spending two nights at lodge in the Amazon!
Not only will we observe jungle wildlife, tropical birds, and alpine meadows; we will also have the chance to visit local villages, participating in weaving and pottery demonstrations.
There are only a few enrollment spots remaining ! Through fundraising and 2018, 2019 and 2020 tax credits, this opportunity of a lifetime can become a reality.

There were over 100 high schools and 150 choirs competing in the styles of Madrigal and Jazz. Both choirs received the highest rating of Superior from two different world renowned Music Professionals. It was an awesome weekend to be a Bobcat!

March 5th & 6th:
Mark your calendars and charge your chromebooks. We will be doing a tech check on these two days to ensure that our technology is ready to go for testing in April. It is imperative that all students bring their chromebooks to school, fully charged.
Intersession with Edgenuity
Intersession's purpose is to give students another opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the specific standards that most students struggled with during the quarter. Note that this is for any non-honors or non-AP course that is listed on the attached flyer. It does have a fee and has a hybrid setup (in person and online). If your student is interested in increasing his/her grade (up to a maximum of 80%). *Sign up in the Bookstore with cash/check/card in order to secure your student's spot.
SEP Intersession
SEP Intersession is mandatory for seniors who have not completed their shadowing hours, turned in their portfolio, or passed their paper. This will take place the first three days of break (March 11-13th) from 9am-1pm in the Ed. Center. If on the first day your student accomplishes what they need to and the teacher releases, then they do not need to attend the following days. The purpose of this intersession is to ensure that no one falls behind on this graduation requirement. Your student's teacher (whether English or Government) will sign them up for this and notify you of their need to attend; there is no form.
3rd Quarter Benchmark Testing Schedule
Reading: Feb 26th & 27th
Math: Feb 28th & March 1st
10th Grade Writing: Feb 28th & March 1st
Biology: March 5th & 6th

ITS OKAY NOT TO BE notOK
|
At CHS, we take your child's mental wellness very seriously. We encourage students to talk about stressors in their lives with you, their peers, school counselors, teachers, and other trusted adults on campus, but sometimes it's difficult to find the words. In addition to suicide prevention work with students both
individually and in classrooms, the counselors at Cienega have been recommending the notOK app.
Many of our kids have been in a situation where they typed out a text message asking for emotional or physical support, only to delete it before sending. If you are interested in another layer of support for your child, we recommend downloading the notOK app which is essentially a free digital panic button linked to safety contacts.
After downloading the app which was designed by teens, the user will be prompted to enter up to five emergency safety contacts. They can personalize their message or use a standard notOK message. Then if they're feeling "notOK" they simply press the button on the app which sends a message to the safety contacts.
Please feel free to contact your child's counselor if you have concerns about your child's mental wellness.
