VENDOVI FOREST | STEVE JUNG
TAKE A FOREST BATH!
Have you heard of “forest bathing?” This somewhat odd-sounding phrase is translated from  shinrin-yoku , a Japanese term that refers to spending time in the woods to soak up its health benefits. Now you can experience  shinrin-yoku i n SJPT-protected forests.
TRUMPETER SWANS | KURT THORSON
ANNUAL SWAN COUNT
Each year in late January, SJPT Stewardship Manager Kathleen Foley coordinates a count of swans in San Juan County. It's part of a regional survey of trumpeter and tundra swans that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife conducts annually.

PHOTO OF THE MONTH
Earlier this winter, San Juan Island resident Traci Walter took this photo of a Western bluebird on the west side of the island. An unusually large number of bluebirds have overwintered on the island this year, rather than flying south.

This winter-hardy female's lack of colored leg bands means that she hasn't been tagged and counted, suggesting that our population is likely a bit bigger than we think—a positive sign!
