News from ASAE
American Associations Day is March 28-29, 2019
American Associations Day is the only legislative fly-in where association professionals like you can connect with Congressional offices and share your story on important association issues. This year our issues will be the value of association meetings to the economy and society along with association tax issues.  This unique opportunity allows you, as an association professional, to create connections with policy-makers that will not only advance the association industry, but your own organization as well.

The event is open to any association executive, staff member, or leadership volunteer who is passionate about association issues and wants to make a difference, while meeting and networking with fellow advocates from across the country. Registration is free, and out-of-town attendees are eligible to receive a scholarship of up to $300 to reimburse travel costs if they visit their members of Congress. The education session on Thursday, March 28 is worth 3.5 CAE credit hours. Please note that this year the Hill visits will take place on Friday, March 29. Congress will not be in session, but this will allow Congressional staff to focus on our meetings and our message.

The CAE preparation programs incorporate study guides, reading comprehension questions, flashcards and practice tests. DISCUSSION FORUM

Podcasting for associations
I'm wondering if any members have started or are considering a podcast for member engagement, marketing or continuing education? Have you noted any increased engagement? I have started two podcasts for our clients, and would like to compare notes and learn from each other's success.
Automated social media
I recently clicked on a boosted Gacebook post requesting more information. A message was sent immediately to my Facebook messenger account thanking me for my interest and asking me if I would like to schedule a call to discuss their products and services. Since their message found my inbox, I am assuming part of their posts functionality was their system knowing and storing who am. I also assume the system could keep some kind of data base of people who clicked on their ad so they could contact the same people in the future. Does anyone know how to create the functionality I described?

ASAE program to explore successful fly-ins
ASAE will host a program April 1 at ASAE's offices in Washington, DC, to examine how association government relations professionals plan and execute a successful legislative fly-in to take their organizations' advocacy messages directly to elected officials. The program, supported by ASAE's Power of A program and the Government Relations Section Council, is part of ASAE's Government Relations Symposium Series. Panelists for the program include WSAE member Chad Lawler, executive director of the Madison Area Builders Association.
Associations press Congress for bipartisan infrastructure revamp
More than 150 organizations signed on to the letter, calling for a "bipartisan, comprehensive package that transforms U.S. infrastructure systems beyond the status quo and maintains U.S. competitiveness in a 21st-century economy." The Infrastructure Working Group, led by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Associated General Contractors of America, warned that a failure to invest risks increasing an already present "infrastructure deficit."

The group called for legislation to address six specific needs: an increase in direct federal infrastructure investment; a remedy for shortages in existing funds; stronger financial tools used for infrastructure investment, such as municipal bonds; more opportunities for private investment in infrastructure projects; an easier federal permitting process; and greater collaboration among all levels of government and between the public and private sector.

"Manufacturers, Congress, and the president all agree the failure to upgrade U.S. infrastructure threatens U.S. economic competitiveness," Robyn Boerstling, the association's vice president of infrastructure, innovation, and human resources policy, wrote. "Now is the time for the business community, labor organizations, Republicans, and Democrats to work together to pass an infrastructure bill."

UBIT repeal gaining traction
Bipartisan support to repeal a 21 percent tax on fringe benefits, including free parking and mass-transit assistance, is growing. Meanwhile, a new report commissioned by Independent Sector reveals the impact of the tax on nonprofits.
AHPs highlighted at Ways and Means hearing
During a House Ways and Means Committee hearing this week, association health plans (AHPs) were referenced as an affordable and effective option for covering individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Ways and Means Democrats convened the hearing Jan. 29 to draw attention to efforts by the Trump administration and Republican lawmakers to chip away at the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
IRS issues guidance on Nonprofit Excise Tax
Despite the partial government shutdown, the IRS on Dec. 31 issued interim guidance on the 21 percent excise tax on tax-exempt executive compensation exceeding $1 million in any taxable year, enacted as part of the 2017 tax law. ASAE has flagged the tax as concerning to the tax-exempt community, particularly because compensation subject to the new tax includes more than just base salary.
Federal and state privacy legislation gaining steam
Federal and state lawmakers are stepping up efforts to pass legislation regulating how companies collect and use personal data. Calls for a national privacy law have gained force after some high-profile missteps last year like Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal and the enactment of sweeping privacy regulations in Europe that among other things require companies to obtain permission before collecting personal data from users.
